Old Ass Strings

Does anyone else prefer the sound of old ass grungy strings? I have never replaced the strings on my P bass and I fear the day that one of them finally pop. The feel pretty stretched out and have a little bit of a grimey color to them. I'm pretty sure that the ol' motown boys like James Jamerson never replaced strings.

I've been using my P in my bar cover band (beatles, Tom Petty, SRV) and it fits the mix pretty well to my ears.

Old strings rock and dead nickel rounds used to trip my triggers. The only issue is the grime and funk and they could break so go to flats and end it.

Even my old flats get gunked up, but it may have more to do with my pregame rituals and tendency to slink all over 'em ;] I just put some spit on my first finger and thumb, and then run them across the gunk. Seems to take it off the best for me. Others will just boil them for a bit when they get dirty. You are not alone!

I've been trying out as many types of strings as I can afford since I started playing. For whatever reason, the strings that sound and feel the best with my hands and bass are old D'addario flatwounds. Even for techniques like double thumbing and tapping, I prefer their percussive sound and tight feel.
