I’ve poked in here & there, but I expect to be around for awhile, so this is me.
Piano is where I tried to start, & by age 10 I’d been locked out of every church & schoolroom with a keyboard in it within walking distance (1 church, 2 cathedrals, 3 schools). Eventually, I had to figure out how to play the drum intro to Wipe-Out & so became a drummer. I found people to sing with & took up rhythm guitar. Eventually, I was hearing new music in my head all the time, and that drew me to the bass.
After 3 years of contemplating the bass, one of my roommates gave me a Glarry PJ in December. At 70 I’ve set myself the goal of playing bass onstage with a band before I turn 75, and I think I’ll make it.
I’m busily working my way thru the circle of fifths, learning the fretboard & how to use my right hand, & sitting with it in my lap, exploring beyond the drills. I’m loving every minute of it, and I love my bass - it’s got good tone & volume acoustically, which I didn’t expect from basswood. It looks good in the natural finish, too. Once I overcame my reluctance @ truss rod adjustment, action is much improved.
I’m also a tinkerer, I like to set up, adjust, even modify my instruments…I see open-gear tuners, maybe a new nut in my future, and the J pickup is cockeyed in its slot, so that needs attention. The arthritis fairy seems to recommend 40-100 strings, and I’m thinking about trying out DR Black Beauties.
I have an Acoustic 120 head, and I need to cobble together a speaker / cabinet to plug it into, so I can have *real* fun. Until I get sound out, that’s my list. I welcome comments, advice, recommendations, warnings, commiseration, story-swapping, etc. about any and all points touched - and feel free to roll your own.
