I'm no expert and all I can do is to relay my little story. All my basses had rosewood boards....just because and no reason other than that. In late 2012 I wanted to find what would be THEE Jazz bass for me and it turned out my local music store had quite a variety to pick from. Strangest thing happened. While comparing just about everything I could get my hands on that was a "Fender" (Squires, MIM's, MIA's), every single bass I tried that had a maple fret board just flat out played better than their rosewood board counterparts. What I mean when I say better is.....the maple board bass necks felt overall different dimensionally to me, felt like they were tailored to fit my hand better than the necks with a rosewood board. Setup and finish had nothing to do with it either.
I know this makes no sense what so ever because as far as I know, Fender necks (regardless of having either a maple or a rosewood board) are suppose to have the same overall dimensions. All I can tell you is that for what ever reason, every single "Fender" bass I tried with a maple board felt more agreeable in my hands dimensionally.
I would up buying a brand new 2009 American Standard Jazz bass. It was one of those basses that somehow got lost in the stores inventory that they rediscovered in October of 2012 and put it on the floor. Maple fret board, black body, white pickguard.....for me it's the finest playing 4 string bass I've ever found. It also has a very even sound from top to bottom.
