Hey all! does anyone know what kind of distortion/fuzz Al from Om is using in this video. Would it be fuzz or distortion? Cant seem to find any info on his gear. Would a bass big muff come close? Thanks!

I can't listen at work but his sound is usually a mixture of dirt and amp distortion.
I know he plays a DOD250 and a Megalith.
I think a bass big muff would come close with the right amp.
I have a bass big muff deluxe which I'm quite happy with but I know I can't get Al's tone with my Hartke rig.
When I saw them live on the most recent tour Al most certainly did not have a lot of pedals. I can't fully remember what he had but I think it was something like a tuner, distortion/od, maybe a delay, and a splitter.
He did have 3 separate amps though. He had a fridge with an SVT can't remember which one, and then two PF series Ampegs. One of the PFs was going thru a 2X10 and one with a 1X15. From what I have read he uses the SVT as his clean sound and runs the distortion through the other amps. Not sure if he is using the distortion on just one of the Ric pickups.
I do think a lot of the tone comes from playing up very high on the neck like around the 12th fret or so. The way he is playing in the video is how he really plays.
All of that being said, his live tone these days is not close to the sound on the records which leads me to believe there is a lot of studio tone shaping going on, and that he is still adapting to the Ampegs after years of Matamps.

Yeah I figured his distorted tone was pretty complex. I just really dig it! Might have to check out that DOD 250 pedal. Thanks!
His live pedal rig has been posted here before. I think it was a Boss tuner, splitting his signal to a Boss DS-1 (yikes!) and a DOD 250. He also had a tanpura synth running through a volume pedal.
In the clip you posted, State of Non Return, his tone is more complex. He uses, I think, an EHX POG for that octave effect on the intro. After that it sounds like DS-1 distortion. However at times a far more mids-heavy and 'boxy' distortion seems to be mixed in. Could be an agressive re-EQ in the studio, or some other trick.

At the end of the video pedals are on the floor in front of the bass player.

I think his rig has varied over the years. But I heard SD-1 as one of the pedals he used.
