This is what all the old basses looked like in the early '80s after being abused in the punk years. They were everywhere and you rarely ever saw a clean one. Then around '87 when the stock market crashed and George Gruhn started telling everyone they were "vintage" and worth $$$, suddenly all of them disappeared and every guitar shop had overpriced "from granda's closet" basses that seemingly were never played. Most of the top vintage guys will candidly admit that now approx. 35% of them are forgeries, easily sold to wankers who will believe what they want to believe.

Leo Fender would be proud to see these old honest relics that have been played, not locked up in a climate controlled glass case and worshiped and complaining that it is missing one correct pickguard screw so it is not original....

I get that there's a certain cachet with old classic basses, but overall I don't really understand the appeal. For 6K I could get any number of amazing basses(maybe a couple) and I wouldn't have to worry about whether the frikkin pots match, whether I'm being scammed, or whether I'm gonna catch a skin disease from it.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Basses are made from trees. Trees lay down their wood in layers one layer per year. There is almost certainly a ring of wood in that bass that was laid down by the tree in 1965.

I would, but for maybe $600.
It's an early 70s Jazz bass that's bees stripped (badly) with DiMarzios.
Nothing a good clean and setup wouldn't put right. But def wouldn't pay 6grand for it.

I think the date estimate might be bit off.

The strings are fine. The D just isn't under the string tree as it should be. Having said that, there's a lot to not like about this bass. Maybe it plays and sounds like a dream...... but I doubt it.

In a later post I mentioned how I enlarged the headstock in the image and found the D to be under the string retainer but slack. Looking again I see no reason to change that.

Or you could get a new rig and age it the hard way.
