On Which Side?

i prefer to stand left of the drumkit, simply because i don't want the headstock of my bass hit any cymbals or hardware.
Hi-Hat side...it is easier to make eye contact and communicate without having a ride cymbal in the way.
I want to be on the hi-hat side, so for most drummers, that's to their left. It facilitatec communication with the drummer, and it makes it a lot easier to hear the hat and snare, which I find to be the most important part of the kit for me to hear.

I prefer to stand where the A/C is. 
If no A/C is available, I usually stand somewhere between the center and the hi-hat side.

Left, which Is where I have stood in almost very band. I especially prefer left if I am the last guy on the lft at the front of the stage. Don't like having anything to my left. If I can't have left, I'll take center. Don't like right.
A lot of times I'll take right so that I can see the guitar players neck/left hand.

I have played on either side, I prefer to play on the right side, I am a righty so I can look down my neck at Guitarist and drummer.
I stand on the right side of the drums (by the floor toms). I never hear the guitars during shows anyway, only the drums. My drummer only hears me so as long as we can hear each other thats all that matters to us anyway.
I've always stood to the far right of the drummer........this way if I'm looking at my neck or in that directing, the drummer is in my perifial visions and we cue off of each other on little nuances in certain songs......Hey it's always worked for him & me, plus it keeps me away from the guitardists.
I prefer to stand to the right so I can hear the bass drum. Most drummers I've played with have their bass drums angled to the right slightly. Hearing the bass drum is key to keeping things tight IMHO.
Always stood on the left side of the drummer. Neck doesn't get in the way and I can lean over and point out chicks in the audience

Something Borderline Offensive
Right side gives me a good view of his right foot, that's usually what I'm trying to lock with most.
(Stage) left side, although my favorite drummer to play with, turns his head to the right, eyes closed and listens. I pretty much just track on his kicks with either foot.
Can't say that we share that much eye contact except when: one of us does something exceptional, and then we nod acknowledgment; or when someone screws up.
He occasionally plays a fill over the 4th beat in the 8th bar coming on somewhere in the 2nd beat (range) and depends on me to plant the ONE. We did a casual a couple weeks back with a blues band and it totally threw the guitar player off but the singer/harp played turned and smiled.
