Agreed with your last part, though some make it easier than others, and some require outboard gear for me to be happy with the sound. But it's my contention that reproducing the sound of your instrument simply doesn't exist. Anyone who has tried to match the sound of an acoustic instrument with amplification knows that it's impossible to meet that goal, and recordings vs hearing the actual instrument being played without amplification proves it. Once it's amplified, it's compromised. On the bright side, I find that quite freeing, so all I worry about is getting a sound that works for the music I'm playing and I throw all this stuff about sonic purity right out the window!
