Double Bass One GOOD thing about open jams...

We often observe the challenge with open jams, that ANYONE can show up. But last Sat we had the OPPOSITE of that, when Robbie Fulks showed up to play. He was every bit of the pro you'd expect, and as nice a guy in person as he comes across as. I don't think the majority of folk knew who he was. Hope he shows up again, but at our earlier, smaller session... The one WITHOUT accordions!

What are your stories about when a pro showed up at an open jam you were at? Or maybe a festival? Ever play with someone and only LATER learn who it was?

We were having our small private jam in a local park when a youngish guy listened for a bit and started chatting us up. He shyly mentioned that he played "a little" so we handed him a guitar. Two notes into his solo, he had "ringer" written all over him. Completely tore it up, then apologized because bluegrass wasn't really his thing, even though he'd grown up with Molly Tuttle. Professor of guitar at the SF Conservatory of Music, plays in several local pro groups.

Robbie Fulks is one of my favorites - great addition to a local jam. Aside from his incredible songwriting, he's one hell of a picker!
