solo starts about a minute and a half in.

"prime" era of jaco in 1976 with weather report. live solo on the wayne shorter tune "lusitanos".

Interesting. Both of the solos are interesting, the OP solo and this one. On the one hand, neither one sounds all that "together" but on the other hand neither one has any Jaco cliches in it. The first one is obviously not bad but doesn't contain the "licks" we're used to.

I guess what makes these two tunes interesting is that Jaco didn't play either one with any regularity AFAIK. It does lend credence to the proposition that most of Jaco's material was pre-conceived. Obviously he could string that material together over tunes he played alot...perhaps not stuff he played less often...

Whether it was improvised or not, the stuff Jaco was playing in the late 70's was incredible and the fact that he conceived it and played it is astounding to me.

what i find interesting is people hearing jaco take an actual live solo and immediately react with he must have not been on that night or he was young or whatever. thats just what he sounded like. the planned out stuff was just on a different level, thats all. the solos on havona and port of entry are nuts.

when i was a kid (yeah i listened to weather report in elementary school:hiding:) i thought the solo on port of entry was a keyboard or something because it was so clean and precise. too bad for mic bleed because you can still faintly hear zawinul taking a solo underneath the overdubbed bass solo:D
