Open string buzz

Hey guys...I know that similar questions have been asked before but I have a few specific questions regarding some buzzing new strings. I just restrung my bass and decided to use a new brand of strings (went with DR Hi-Beams)...Problem is, my E and A strings are buzzing now. The A string buzzes when played open and the E buzzes when I play a few frets up the neck. Seeing as this isn't a new bass and the previous set of strings didn't have this issue, I'm thinking it's a nut problem but I'm really not too sure. Any help? If it is a nut problem, how would I go about fixing it? I'm actively playing three or four shows a week so I'd really like to get on this as soon as I can. Thank you so much!

Nico

The nut is not the problem if fretted notes are buzzing.

If the new string set is lower tension, the relief will decrease and also the string height.

You may just need to re-setup the bass.

Do you have the actual tensions for the two different string sets?

Same gauge strings can have different mass per unit length, and therefore different tensions.
For example, flat wound and round wound of the the same gauge might have same diameter,
but different mass, and different tension.

I don't have the tension of the original set I was using. If it's a tension problem would the action be the only thing that needs to be adjusted or is it a truss rod problem as well? I have a good friend who does great set ups so I've never really taken the time to learn (kicking myself)

Thanks

Any number of possibilities:

*Inadequate number of string wraps on the posts. Should be "hitting the deck".

*Failed to set witness points at nut and bridge.

*Inadequate relief (.010-.014")

*Too-deep nut slots. Check string > 1st fret clearance while fretting the 3rd (.003-.005")

*Full-wrap portion of the string is not clearing the nut.

This is the simple stuff that should be ruled out first.
