The guy from Opeth plays a Marcus Miller Jazz?! I guess if it that's the tone he's lookin for, why not!

Nope, on their website it says Fender Marcus Miller Jazz bass and Fender P-Bass Light.

I saw a video of him playing a Squier bass ... Any yes, he does play a MM Jazz, weird huh , imagine MMs reaction when he finds out a melodic/prog/death metal band uses his bass, teehee .

it seems loads of metal bands use jazz style basses

i mean jason newsted had sadowskys, robert trujillo has a fernendes jazz and tim commerford plays jazzes aswell

Yeah dude! Martin is a huuuuge jazz fan.

I think his tones sit perfectly in the mix. He has a style that doesn't overplay, but distinctively plays against the guitars in some cases without stepping on their toes. His elegant simplicity, I think, leads to his choice in basses. The MM sig isn't the most barebones Fender model, but it totally works for Martin's personality and playing style.

Hey, I didn't know that!
My band was covering Deliverance by Opeth and my guitarist laughed and said I had a bass like Martin's.
I don't play an MM jazz but I play a Swamp Ash 5 string Fender J bass Copy by Brice...looks similar except the pickguard is classic.
And J basses have sick tone and I don't know why more metallers use them (other than for asthetic reasons).

Yup! Just another reason for us MM users to be proud. I have the live DVD, and I'm pretty sure he has two MM's he switches between. They're sweet basses! And Opeth is one awesome band.

Mostly EADG I believe, with a few songs in drop D. The Marcus Miller is awesome, and he also plays a P bass.

Fellow Opeth Fans:

I never really considered it weird that Martin played a Jazz. I've always considered it to have a very versatile tone that works in most musical situations. As stated, I think he always plays appropriately, adding rhythm as well as melody.

I've been a fan of theirs since about 1998, and I've seen them live 3 times. I'm pretty much a fanboy.

I found a really great interview with their previous bassist Johan DeFarfalla (Found on Albums: Orchid, Morningrise)[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]They actually contact Johan, He is now a politician in Sweden. Michael actually adds to the forum discussion also. I highly suggest check in it out.

If you haven't heard the bass playing on Morningrise I strongly suggest you check it out, it's probably their best album in terms of bass playing.

I wasn't surprised myself when I saw that he played a Jazz on the Deliverence-era DVD they put out. In that picture above, the MM looks completely metal.

I'm quite excited for the new album. However, I'm very dissappointed that Martin Lopez is no longer their drummer. He has been one of my favorite drummers for some time now; you can't get much tastier than him in a metal context.

Is it odd at all that the two new albums I'm looking foward to the most this year are Opeth and Death Cab For Cutie?! haha
