Hi all, greetings from Basingstoke in the UK. I am looking for some opinions/suggestions on my bass set-up as I seem to be accumulating gear and not quite getting what I want out of it!
The story so far:
I have an old Fender P (circa 1974, USA), passive, original pick-ups etc
I also have a fairly low level Double Bass (cost me around £400) which has had piezo pick ups installed either side of the bridge.
As far as amps go - I have a Trace Elliot 100W head plus a seperate cab (15" plus tweeter) - I think was originally a PA cab. This set-up sounds great with both the Fender P and the Double Bass when I play at pretty low volumes in Church, but lacks power for when I play bigger gigs (just with the Fender P) with my much louder covers band.
So, I invested in a 300W Trace Eliot Combo. This sounds great with the Fender P and is plenty loud enough for gigs, but sounds awful with the Double Bass (why two Trace Eliiots produce such a different sound with the Double Bass is a mystery to me).
Next I thought I would try a different louder amp, so I bought a 300W Ashdown amp plus seperate 4x10" cab. Again sounds sounds good with the Fender P but not that good with the Double Bass. (wife getting annoyed by now with the amount of gear in the garage!)
So then I bought a Fishman pre-amp and compressor pedal - this made the Fender P sound even nicer but didn't do much for the Double Bass!
Where I want to be is with one rig to cover all eventualities.
Thoughts to date are
a) Buy a seperate 300W trace head plus cab and sell all the rest
b) Buy a seperate pre-amp and power amp (maybe a 12 band Trace pre-amp) plus seperate cab
c) Find another make of amp that goes with both Fender P and Double Bass.
The problem is finding a solution which I can fund from selling the existing kit - plus proving it works before I part with cash again!
Any idea welcome!
Thanks
