Opinions on entry level Spector basses

Hey All,

Looking to buy my first standard 4 string bass (I have a Schecter Stiletto Stelath 4 Pro EX which is BEAD) and I am really loving the tones that I am hearing on youtube, however, I am not able to demo a Spector in my area. To anyone who has experience with the entry level Spector basses...pros? cons? Do you suggest a mid-level over an entry level? Talk bass to me!!!!

I've been playing a Legend 4 for about 5 months now. The only criticism I have is that I find the pick ups kinda of muddy? I'm not sure if it's the preamp or the pickups. I'm planning on getting a set of EMG X and a lhz vintage preamp, but for now I'm ok with the bass as is. Asides from that, it is an impressive bass, imo. Super comfortable, balances well both with a strap and w/o, the finish on the neck is amazing, the fretboard looks incredible.

You need to try before you buy. Play one seated and standing and on a strap. Some find Spectors very uncomfortable with an odd / hard reach . But my goodness do they sound great!!
Definitely this. Spectors sound great, but due to the length of the top horn (and by extension position of the strap pin), the bass sits with its neck further out than most other basses. This might not be a problem if you play with the bass hung low, but if you like to wear it high, it can make the reach to the first few frets a bit of a stretch.

Performer is their entry level bass. I wouldn't consider the Legend entry level but it is affordable. I owned one for a few years. Pretty much upgraded everything on the bass except the bridge. The bass was a beast but I missed my Jazz and traded her away. I miss her. I may buy her back at some point.
Yea Im referring to the Performer!! Why did you feel the need to upgrade everything or was it just a preference or a cost effective strategy to buying a mid level bass?

It's been a few years now, but I attempted to own a Spector Performer 4 on October 2022 (if I recall correctly), and the process only failed due to a company refusing to send me another after issues with tuners on the 1st bass, a broken neck on the 2nd (FedEx ground destroyed it, not my fault nor Korg/Spector's), and more tuner issues on the 3rd bass. I fully intended to own one in white, and it did look and feel great in person-I remember thinking it was quite comfortable back then, and the Indonesia factory pickups weren't bad at all. I loved it was passive, as that is something I definitely prefer in my basses (or the ability to bypass the preamp.) I was annoyed at the company who sold me the bass for having a "policy" against sending me another bass for a 4th time, especially because the second bass was destroyed by shipping. The tuning machines worked well out of the box, but soon started slipping while tuning, and wouldn't hold a strings tension beyond a certain point ( and got worse and worse-often all of the sudden the other tuners will stop working as well.) Knowing what I do now, I would have just switched out these Gotoh GB707 replicas for authentic ones for cheap, but the company's response to my issue-and KORG having NEVER responded to my support request over email-made me lose interest as something that wasn't meant to be.

It is very possible that the current 2023 and 2024 new Performer 4 line does not have bad tuners out of the box, and I was just unlucky receiving basses with a bad batch of tuning machines, so do not let my experience necessarily deter you. I also never hated the bass. I forget now, but some of the samples may have had a few sharp frets, but nothing difficult to solve. Truss rod worked on both non-broken samples, pickups were consistently decent. If I had spare money, I would buy one in purple to modify with DiMarzio pickups, leave it all passive, and buy a Hipshot Xtender and 3 regular Gotoh tuners due to my fear of these failing in the future! But again, I may have been unlucky, and another bass from Indonesia Cor-Tek I purchased recently has no such stock Gotoh-style tuning machines issues.

If you love the shape and it's personally comfy, it definitely could work out well for you. Try ordering from someone with a good return policy. Despite my "bad" story above, I never hated this "entry level" bass, and was prepared to make it work had it not been for my unique issues. I found a great, new MiM Fender P bass soon after on sale, so I closed that chapter then-the only thing that keeps me away from "regular" Spector besides the price are the active only electronics, but IME, the shape was comfortable (the Performer 4 is specifically a bit different thickness-wise vs the normal Spector shape every body loves/hates, but it still is very much a Spector bass in spirit.)

(There is no "need" to upgrade anything if everything works, and it did sound good to me-I just have a tendency to switch out things and make it my own "custom" bass. Some basses I do not touch, but the Performer 4 seems like the perfect, cool platform to customize. I understand $399.00 USD seems high vs other PJ style options for this purpose, but it looks and feel nice, so it may be worth the price + upgrades/sidegrades *if* that is what you want.)

Spectors are a brand (also Warwick, not that those were mentioned) that have a sound that is killer, but many people just don't enjoy the ergonomics. You really have to play one to figure out if they are something you can deal with, or if you're just not compatible.

Just referring to my case. I found mine in a pawn shop. Something was wrong with the electronics so I installed a full US EMG system (pups and pre). I added Hipshot tuners and StrapLoks. I already had everything so didn't spend a dime. If the electronics were good, I probably wouldn't have done anything to it. I do tend to mod my basses though.

Pic of me playing it below. Not my rig. Was backline.

I have a Legend 5 that my son bought me at a mom n pop store for Father's Day. After my setup, and new strings, it is just fine in every way! I've played it out with nothing but good feedback. I've been playing since 68. This bass is surpassed by none. It is now one of my top go to's. In fact, I have a 4 hour gig Saturday night. I do believe it gets the call.
