Opinions on Fender Jags

Ok, so I'd be getting a Japanese bass?

From some people, I've heard their Japanese line is actually better than the American (sorry patriots)

I love the switches! You can do so much, plus it looks stylin'

EDIT: So I just called Musicians Friend (they have it on sale) and they said that it's manufactured in their Mexican warehouse... :(

Its also kind of a rumor that CIJ/MIJ is better than MIA, what allot of people doesn’t realize is with a production bass quality varies with each one. People believe the Japanese workers are more diligent and do better work then an American once again quality varies person to person.


I would not trust a MF customer service rep, a fender rep stated in another thread that it is CIJ

I always heard the CIJ Fenders from the 80s up to the mid-90s were better than their MIA counterparts. I didn't know that was still the mindset for new Fenders today.

As for the Jags, they're good basses, but you'll definitely want to check the wiring - I've heard a few stories of some loose solder points and such; nothing major, but still worth checking.

Couldn't you just check out the item description, instead of posting this twice?

2 On/Off slide switches (one for each pickup)
1 Series/Parallel slide switch (when both pickups are on)
Master Volume, Master Tone, Preamp Treble Control Wheel, Preamp Bass Control Wheel, Preamp On/Off slide switch controls

Not to be a smart-ass, but the search button is your friend...

there is TONS of info on this forum about the Jag.

Many folks, like myself, find them a bit silly... All they are is a J bass with switches that seem "retro".

I'd rather buy a used US fender for about the same $$.

So would I be better off if it was MIM or MIJ?

Well there are CIJ models we dont even get here in the USA, i owuld expect some of the MIJ to be better as MIA because for a small period there were no MIA fenders being made.

depends, if you got a lemon of a CIJ then a well pu together MIM would be better, basically if you buy the bass i bet its a Crafted in Japan model i would bet money on it, if it is MIM and you think it feels like junk return it you dont lose any money just the time to re package it.

They are not particularly advertising it as MIJ though. I ordered one and verified that it is MIJ twice. If it really turns out to be MIM, off chance that is, I will drive to Kansas myself and put that bass up their ......

Finally on topic: I haven't played it, nor was interested in it. But I needed a Jazz type bass for a project and it was on sale. I also noticed the bridge pickup in 70s Jazz Bass position and heard the neck profile is thinner than Jazz, so it kinda grew on me before even receiving the bass. I have heard negative things about the on-board preamp, but I can always rebuild one to my specs, which I probably will :D

CIJ quality tends to be a little better than MIM, although I've seen good and bad examples of both in a variety of basses. IMO, the MIA Fender are still better built than the CIJ models and they definitely have better components (pickups, hardware, etc.).

I disliked my Jag when I had it, but I've recently listened to a recording I did back when I had it and it sounded better than I remembered. Its basically a Jazz Bass with series/parallel and a defeatable 2-band, boost-only EQ. Just give the electrnoics a thorough run-through before buying. They are pretty nice for the price, but I would rather get the MIM Classic 70s Jazz Bass in that price range. YMMV.

Exact;y , i would just get the customer services persons employee number or name that way if it was MIM i could call them up and say it was misrepresented


Or just say something is wrong with it, yes it is not honest but hey they were not honest with the buyer.
