Opinions on intro music

Hey Guys, we're thinking about using samples for certain songs/intros and not sure what to use...for example Air Raid sirens for the beginning of War Pigs, the beginning of Holy Diver by Dio and have it cut off when we come in maybe Ozzy's laugh yelling Sharon at the beginning of Bark at the Moon and maybe a few other songs just to add a little spice to the set.. we could just use a i pod/pad but that's a pain ...I was thinking about something like this Roland SPD One wav pad, I could use my foot to turn it on and off and you could have 12 samples and that's more than enough for what we need has anyone ever used this Sample pad or have any other ideas of what to use, also don't want to spend a lot of money I could pick this up for around $140....Thanks

I suggested using the THX sound at the start of our gigs, but... I'm just the bass player, and rarely ever paid attention to.

I am in a Black Sabbath tribute band and I use a Boss RC-3. I pulled a WW2 air raid siren off the internet, and various other sounds from the Sabbath albums. Then I put them in a DAW, adjusted the EQ, compression and more. This way, I had tracks/FX that I could simply click the pedal, play it, stop it. It is not feeding off a click or anything like that. My feet control when it comes on and goes off. Very easy, excellent sound, and I have full control.

Our drummer has a sample pad with some sounds in it, but he uses one that has 6 large pads and 6 small pads. It works well for our purposes, and I think if you only want to do a few, a single pad unit would work.

Hey Gear, couple questions for ya, do you use A/B footswitch for memory up and down and the other switch for off and on and also do you think it's worth getting a RC-5 over the RC-3 or does the RC-3 do it's job good since I'll be using the same way you are...Thanks

The foot switch does memory up and stop only. I have to manually touch the RC-3 to go back to a specific track. The RC-3 has excellent sound quality and I never considered the RC-5. I am not even sure what the difference is in the models truly is.

I gotta say we're super advanced... not! I use Loopy Pro on an iPad which is great at captuing and trimming. Halloween I grabbed the cauldron and casketbit from the Monster Mash. Yes, we don't take ourselves very seriously here at the 4mal entertainment juggernaught ;-)

First night I forgot to turn off thr iPad mic and speakers. Oops, howling feedback when I brought it up to volume. Next time it was fine.

I've migrated to an A&H CQ18T. On that, or on my Soundcraft UI-24r I can playback from a USB Stick. The playback itself would be controlled from the app. Low tech but for the casual user, pretty easy and not much in the way of cost.


Back in my sound co days I did a really good Eagles tribute from BC. Eagle Eyes. The keybord guy also played 12 string. His keys parts were sampled and ran off an iPhone into our di when he was playing guitar. He controlled the playback. I recall that we had it in his monitor and the drum monitor and the mains. They had done that enough times that it was seemless to me. He sat on the keybord bench plyong the 12. I doubt anyone other than a musician would have known.

One of my drummers has an corporate 80's party band. Those guys have tons of tracks. They all come off a laptop next to the drums.

So... some of those options can be foot controlled, mixer and mixer location depending.

When my band did this, I used a SanDisk Clip MP3 player connected to an input on the mixer board. I just keep a folder of sound clips loaded on the memory card and cue them up at the beginning of each set. Press play to start each clip.

These players are dirt cheap ($20) and durable, and extremely easy to use.

I have several options that I use.
My bands can be quite intro heavy.
I use either a nux live mate, which is basically an mp3 player in a pedal, but you need to stop it if you’re using multiple tracks
I also use a boss rc3 which plays wav files and will stop once the file finishes once you set it to a one shot loop. The only downfall for me is that you have to stomp twice if you ever need to stop the track, unless you buy a separate switcher. Similarly with advancing a track it requires a small button pushed on the pedal unless you have the external switcher.
I also use a digitech jamman stereo, which makes it easier to change tracks on the fly ( for situations like moving songs around / dropping them in the moment.) as it has track up and down buttons. Again it will play a track and finish when set.
