Carved. You can see the Grain at a slight angle running thru from the Top. Not a great pic but the outside edge would be easier as the inside of teh FFs are colored.
Looks carved to me... grain as Ken mentions all the way through. The scale of the pic might be screwing with me, but if that was a ply top at that thickness, that'd be one Mother of a top...
That's what I thought myself...carved. I got that pic from a fellow who's selling a 1939 Kay Orchestra model. I'd asked him how many plys the top had, since some of the older, thinner tops with 3 plys are more desirable to some vintage Kay buffs. He sent me that photo...looks like the top has been replaced, huh? Definitely refinished...no painted purfling.
