Oprah show topic - bullying

Most bullied Kids end up becoming cops. Then they feel its payback time for all the years they've gotten pushed around.

In my entire life I've only met two cool cops. All the others are Dicks. Just my .02.

You've met 2 more than I have

I never really got bullied but I did observe one guy getting bullied and I won't lie I participated. This guy was a complete ass and essentially made it his goal to annoy everyone in the class, pretty much he was trying to be a bully but failing at it I guess. He was just an idiot pretty much, he ended up transferring to another school so I don't know what ever happened to him. I could definitely see him becoming a cop though.
:hmm:

I've always wondered how it is that I've lived in a few states and always managed to land in a law enforcement eutopia where the police have amazingly had roughly the same percentage of tools as the general population. Lucky, I guess.

Bullies are sick people, sick children, they're twisted in the head.NONE OF THEM becomes a GOOD person. There's no need to "try to understand why he bullies others".

I'm not even sure these kids would understand what they caused, they lack "emphaty".They can not understand what they're doing. What gives us the ability to emphatisise(?) are called "mirror neurons".When these don't work, mind you a part of the brain not functioning correctly, one can hit anothers face with brass knuckles as if they were hitting a wooden desk.

They're probably laughing about it right now...

My experience is somewhat different. I moved back to the same city I grew up in and strangely the number of police officers that I considered a-holes/douchebags/tools has dropped dramatically. Other than me not being a young, troublemaking (and often drunken) hooligan I can't figure out what has caused this change.

Weird.

Bullies just need to be sucker punched and hit very very hard. It worked for me as a child on the school bus. That bully never bothered anyone again. In my case I used a history book as a bat and his face was the ball.

+1

I grew up during the Vietnam war in a medium sized city in the US,
got beat up all the time and got called a Nip, Gook, Chink, etc...
I never wanted to kill myself but I wanted to kill them.

I learned how to fight and started kicking any ones ars who messed with me...does that make me the bully now? :ninja:
it even got to the point that when I saw a helpless kid getting bullied
I would help him out...

I really believe kids at an early age need to learn about boundries and how to protect them as well as self worth and self reliance...

From grade 6 to grade 8, I was bullied. There were days when I would fake illness so I wouldn't have to deal with that stuff for a day. I learned that they just liked to piss me off to the point where I'd freak - that was entertaining for them. So I just ignored them. Any time they tried to get me goin', I'd just leave. They eventually stopped bugging me but it took a while.

Y'see, my problem wasn't that I was small or non-athletic... I was just a quiet, shy kid. But I didn't know my own strength. Learning to walk away when I'm feeling rage has helped me, even as an adult. To this day, I hate getting really mad because I still don't know my own strength (6'2", 247 lbs., used to play hockey/work out a lot) and I'd hate to hurt someone because they just happened to push the wrong button.

I admit to bullying other kids too. And it's 'cuz I could. I've never been proud of that, but I guess that's how I ended up dealing with things.

I really have never been bullied before as I usually ignore people like that and don't give any reaction, but I have stopped three or four bullying attempts from happening. Pretty much told them to knock it off, and stop picking on the other person. Thankfully each time it was a situation where there was work to be done, and I used the excuse of "there's not enough time for the two of you to get at it".

The endless cycle of the bullied becoming bullies.

True, and I see it in my own family. My mother is an angry, critical, demanding person. She has said that her mother used to criticize her. That explains why she has taken it out on her kids. Now she is reaping what she has sewn. None of us gets along with her and my siblings aren't speaking to her (it's been years now). Happy Mother's Day Mom! :spit:

Fortunately, I'm no bully. And I don't feel any sympathy for those who are.

I don't normally watch the show, I just saw the last few minutes. Ya gotta believe me! :bawl: I went on Oprah's web site to check out the story. It piqued my interest because of the women who lost their sons and me being a bereaved parent as well, this sort of thing hits me hard.

So not only were you watching it, but you're admitting to enjoying it and seeking it out on Oprah's website? So what's the url on that. www.turninyourmancard.com?

You would have been much better off not admitting to the source for your thread topic, because you've already stated you have a legitimate reason. WAY BETTER than being inspired by Oprah. Still. I feel your pain buddy. I'm just giving you hard time. Whatever you do, don't click on that link. :)

But all kidding aside. I'm really am sorry for your loss. As a parent, I couldn't imagine going through that pain. :(

When I was younger I was over-weight for my age, hated sports, and large social gatherings. I was bullied during elementary School, my brother (without my knowledge) would threaten my bullies to stop which only spurred them on as he was at a different school he couldn't do anything during school without skipping class which would make my mother very mad. During this time he was in Hockey, Tae Kwan Do, and later Karate. He had taught me simple wrist locks that pissed off many of the bullies once they started trying to hurt me.

In middle school things were different as the school I attended separated their students randomly to different tiger species* (as the mascots was a tiger) evidently my tiger group was lacking many of the jocks which were my bullies in previous years. At the end of my Middle School Years a stupid bully started saying stupid things in class, he was from California and was moving back after the school year was over; anyways he started telling me stupid things about my intelligence and weight, when I asked him to stop he continued, after a few more failed attempts I knuckle-punched a pressure of one of his thighs, this sent him to the ground groaning. The teacher wasn't there and he was embarrassed and slowly got up and ran to his class.**
After he left people thought I scared him off and now pass on acknowledging me as a target.

*They sectioned parts of the school into different groups that they made up to make the classes closer together to deal with the small building size and large student body.
**Look up.

I was always among the smallest in my class in grade school and through high school and I was a bookworm so I got bullied quite a bit. I dealt with it the best I could, one incident at a time, and it never really was a "problem" for me - I thought of it as just one more unpleasant thing about the jail that was school.

But about my sophomore year of high school I began to really take an interest in as many elective school activities as possible such as track and other sports, the school newspaper, weight lifting, music, and many other after school activities and I made lots of friends among the different cliques like the jocks, nerds, preppies, stoners etc. and it became that any bully that thought of bothering me had a mutual friend with me who would vouch for me that I was "cool" and I shouldn't be picked on.

And four years of sports and serious weight training (and martial arts, later on) paid off and I haven't had too many bullies try to bother me since.

One of my friends in 7th grade handled a gang of bullies at the bus stop pretty wisely and it made and impression on me. He was stronger than all of them but they thought they could get away with picking on him because they outnumbered him 4 to 1. One of them took his lunch and told him try and get it back. Then they started to play "keep away" with it, tossing it back and forth among themselves. After about 10 seconds of this, my friend told them that he wasn't about to go chasing after his lunch but would beat the crap out of the next person to touch it and he would also beat the crap out of anyone else who touched it. His lunch was then tossed to one of the bullies and my friend walked right up to him and punched him right in the gut putting the kid on the ground. He did the same thing to the unlucky kid who happened to be the one to catch it last. The other two kids suddenly lost interest in the game and mosied away to the other side of the road leaving his lunch there on the grass for him to retrieve.

None of the four ever bothered him again and most kids in school heard about how he handled himself and he had a reputation as someone who couldn't be pushed around.

I used to get bullied all the time. I was a chubby kid with Tourettes Syndrome.

The cold hard truth of the matter is life is not fair. You will be bullied in some way for the rest of your life, be it from a weapon toting thug or an Ahole boss it will happen. In the interest of "self esteem" the school system will not curb bulllying behaviour any more. They are more interested in why instead of what and the kids being bullied are helpless.

I had a bully in high school and when I finally snapped and kicked the crap out of him and got suspended my Dad said "enjoy your 3 day vacation". We need to teach our children to get thier self esteem from thier own hard work and accomplishments, not the opinions of others, it used to be the opinion that competition breeds character i.e. self esteem. Bullies should be isolated and/or removed from the school system and it is a serious problem but if the kid couldn't deal with a high school bully real life would have crushed him.

Just my opinion YMMV

I was bullied a little bit, being a really small kid in school. It was a regular thing in 7th grade to chase me around and hit me, that's where I got my above-average agility. I also tended to practice a policy of avoidance, where anyone I had a problem with was simply avoided. I learned where they hung out, which routes they took to classes, etc. I then took different ways. My parents would have killed me if I had gotten into a fight.

That's one of the things I dread about going to college in my future, I'm still the little guy. Anyone had that problem in college? Jocks, snobs, just plain mean people?

Peace,
Greg
