Oprah show topic - bullying

That's one of the things I dread about going to college in my future, I'm still the little guy. Anyone had that problem in college? Jocks, snobs, just plain mean people?

College is more like the real world, there are *** holes who will be jerks, but you don't have recess or gym class....and a professor sure as heck won't put up with that stuff.

So yeah you'll have to deal with the occasional frat boy who thinks he is better than you and wants to you to fight him cause he just drank a case of natty ice, but you will never see him again.

I didn't. College is a new game with new rules. If someone does mess with you, introduce them to your can of mace and then tell campus security they tried to mug you.

Sounds pretty good to me. Personally I'm hoping Texas adopts Utah's state policy of allowing concealed carry on all state-funded institutions, with the rash of college shootings in recent history. I'm surprised my state wasn't the first with that one.

But it is nice to know that I am allowed to strike back at aggressors. That was the stupidest idea in school, I can only run or get my butt kicked without getting in trouble.

Peace,
Greg

Whatever you do, don't click on that link. :)

Of course I had to click on the link. :D

That reminds me, when I was around 7 or 8, this much older and bigger boy (a teenager) started picking on me. I didn't even know the guy but he accused me of calling him names and started listing all these swear words: "Which one was it kid?!!! @#$%$%, or $*&#$, or #$*&@!?!!" etc. On another occasion, he was walking by with his friend and I heard him say "There's the kid I want to beat up!"

Years later, I saw him at a local store and I got the distinct impression he was gay. He was probably trying to reassure himself of his masculinity by picking on little kids.

In junior high I had a bully. Basically decided he wanted to make my life a living hell, and for a short period of time, he was successful. I stood up to him one day and we had a short fist fight, but there was no clear victor as it was broken up before anything could really happen. He promised retaliation by him and all of his friends for trying to stand up to him, basically telling me I was in the for the beating of my life when I least suspected it. Some of his crew have spent legit time in juvenile hall for this kind of thing, so I knew he wasn't bluffing. It's worth noting I was a "late bloomer" in the height department, and this kid was easily a foot taller than I.

I didn't want to bring my parents into this, fearing even worse retaliation, plus my dad always told me I need to stand up for myself. So what did I do? I called the police's anonymous tip line, and said he had a large amount of marijuana in his possession. I didn't even know if that was true or not, but I guess he did - cause shortly after I never saw him again. :D

8th grade me threw the hail mary and beat the bully. Go me.

I used to get bullied all the time. I was a chubby kid with Tourettes Syndrome.

The cold hard truth of the matter is life is not fair. You will be bullied in some way for the rest of your life, be it from a weapon toting thug or an Ahole boss it will happen. In the interest of "self esteem" the school system will not curb bulllying behaviour any more. They are more interested in why instead of what and the kids being bullied are helpless.

I had a bully in high school and when I finally snapped and kicked the crap out of him and got suspended my Dad said "enjoy your 3 day vacation". We need to teach our children to get thier self esteem from thier own hard work and accomplishments, not the opinions of others, it used to be the opinion that competition breeds character i.e. self esteem. Bullies should be isolated and/or removed from the school system and it is a serious problem but if the kid couldn't deal with a high school bully real life would have crushed him.

Just my opinion YMMV

Glad to hear you took care of the jerk. (standing ovation). :hyper:

If you're saying that a certain amount of suffering early in life can be beneficial for dealing with life later on, you may have a point. The sad thing is, these kids who committed suicide had been bullied long-term. They probably had zero self-esteem left. If you're going to rob someone of self-worth do it in their childhood, it will stay with them.
