Double Bass Optimal sitting height?

I've recently started some self study on bass using the Vance book age taking a few semesters of lessons. During my lessons, I always played standing up; however, now I'm finding myself sitting on a stool. Not only is it more comfortable, but I'm finding my Intonation and shifting are better as well. I am a little worried that my chair is too low, and I wanted to ask what stool height is best for bass playing.

I'm using a 24" bar stool at the moment, and I'm a 5'9" male. It has a foot bar to rest my left leg on and I get clearance with the bow over my right knee (though just barely), but the nut is a couple inches higher than when I'm standing. Both hands are in comfortable positions, though. Should I try to find a 28-30" stool, or is the one I'm using good enough?

While the other thread has some good stuff in it, experimentation is your friend right now. Try sitting higher or lower (add a phonebook or two to your stool if they still print those to give you a sense of higher vs. lower) and it is also a good idea to experiment with your endpin, and how far the bass is away from you. You might find that the pin all the way in is the way to go, or you might find having it extended and having the bass lean more on an angle into you is what works best.

There are a few different schools of thought on sitting with a bass, but a lot of it comes down to your own personal dimensions and your instrument as well until you find something that works.
