Depends a bit on what you’re getting for tubes I suppose but price wise 12x 6L6GC will usually be fairly comparable to 6x 6550 from the same brand/product line.

Using JJ pricing as they’re some of the cheaper ones available right now, but AES has single tubes at $26.95, matched pairs at $56.90, matched sextets at $170.70, and if you do the extra burn in a sextet is $179.40. My past experiences with retail JJs I would absolutely pay the extra $10 for extended burn in with those. So that’s $358.80 for two matched sextets.

For JJ 6550 you’re looking at $56.95 each, $116.90/pair, $350.70/sextet, or $359.40 for a burned in sextet.

Owning and operating a tube amplifier is like owning a classic car. You probably are not going to have it as your daily driver unless you got money coming out of your ears. Most of us don't so we're going to keep it as the nice weather Sunday afternoon drive it around pedal to the floor occasionally to keep it happy.

I only use my tube amplifiers on outdoor gigs for that extra umph and we don't always play outdoors except in the warmer months. I also do all of my own repairs as I have the background and capability with access to resources at each manufacturer to get pretty much whatever I need most of the time. So I'm the exception don't go by me haha!

Many feel that tubes gives them some sort of mojo, that is not available with solid state. I am not one of those people, but I have a bunch of tube amps in my collection and they sound wonderful and a have a wide range of personalities. In most instances I prefer big solid-state power. But, IMHO there is not a right or wrong answer here.

Agreed. I'm up to 7 tube amps and each are unique. I have a 9lb 1000W Class D head for most gigs for ahead raw pant flapping power, but those special ones off gigs where.I simply want to show off my fire bottles, I can break out the 300W beasts.

orange is cool, sounds decent, but is made in china (like most things these days… not a negative really).

traynor is made in canada and is a beast. and 12 tubes is cool af. ampeg style eq… big bottom, glass highs, scooped or grinding mids… it is all there. big round clean sound. my choice because… and i am shock i am about to type this… i think modern digital distortion is superior. i like the headroom but tube warmth.

my traynor yba 200 was more of a orange vibe sound (fender tone stack) and could be pushed to break up pretty easy. it is mid cut only so it is poorly understood. 2/10/2 is flat eq.

the yba100 is a gem… a 300 in every way, just 100w. so more reasonable to push for tube distortion.

i did not get one. pf20 may be what you see and it does not break up like i wanted (it does not break up). now… a 20w h&k amp… amazing. lead channel breaks up really well!

Herb at Yorkville NY is also a great guy for parts support too.

One fun thing about Herb is that he looks nothing like what his name suggests, but exactly what his voice suggests he'd look like.

Next time you talk to him, ask if it's square pie day or round pie day - it'll be hilarious. He'll have no idea how you'd know those terms. (it was an office lunch thing years and years ago)

Before it released, I tried a DH15 through some bass cabs - I can't remember exactly what - one was the bottom of my B15N, the others would have maybe been a flatback Ampeg 810, maybe a Schroeder 21012 or something...

Bass was super flabby, not usable for normal bass sounds at all. Could be fun as a multiamp kind of thing, or as a dirt channel DI.
