Orange combos?

Hey all

I'm currently jamming on a teeny weeny 10 watt Peavy transtube bass amp, but in the next 4-5 months I'm looking to get a bigger combo once I move out of my townhouse.

I've always been interested in the Orange amps if nothing else but by the color and now how great Jason Newstead sounds playing out of them has got my interests absolutely piqued.

Before I drive 85 miles to the nearest GC (my local shop doesn't sell them), are their combo amps something worth picking up? I like a lot of punch and clarity over rumble, but low end is obviously important.

A few months ago, I was in the market for a new combo amp. I tried out an Orange 50w, Fender Rumble 75, and Ampeg BA112. The Orange had a lot of clarity and a lot of punch and sounded very strong and clean. I was looking for something deeper sounding with more of a "rumble", so I went with the Fender. The Ampeg had such terrible hiss that I stopped playing on it after a few minutes.

From what you said you are looking for, I think you would be pleased with the Orange 50w or 100w.

The Crush series seems to be decent. They actually make a combo that is the 500w terror bass amp and the SP212 cabinet, and that is an amazing combo. They also improved the design slightly, and have slightly different preamp tubes that allow a touch more clean headroom than my current one. I'm ok with the dirty dirty, however. GC doesn't stock a lot of the high end bass stuff from Orange, but can order it in and if you don't like it they will take it back. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

For the price they're asking for that Terror combo I could get a Terror bass head and a 2x12 Deep Red Bag End cab, an effects processor, and a custom case for my speaker cab.

That's seriously overpriced. Especially considering how absofreakinglutely amazing Bag End cabs are.

The head is the way to go - those are not terribly expensive and they do rock hard. It's so small that it's not like hauling my Fender Bassman around.

Although I will say that I bought a Fender Ruble 350 watt 210 combo for my church recently and have been very happy with it. It rocks hard and I paid $399 for it.

But basically, it doesn't matter what WE think - YOU decide on a buget and then YOU go play all you can and buy the one YOU like best!!

That's the fun part!!

get a nice roller case...and it makes for a very easy set up and tear down!

It depends on how big you want or need.

I have one of the Crush 50s. Works well for practice and parlor or basement jams. Wish I'd gotten the 100 for a little more oomph. But for a small amp it works well and has good sound. My boy likes the sound running a six string thru it. Have mine sitting on a QuikLok stand. Gets it up in the air a litle bit and angles it so you can hear it much better.

One more thing, like you said in the original post. They look cool as hell.
