What does the 3015 do when placed in the Orange cab as compared to the Kappa-15A?

A couple differences in tonality, but to me what's most notable when no EQ has yet been applied: the Kappa-15A has the big typical midbass hump/boom of that generation of drivers while the 3015 in comparison in that same box has tight yet deep bass. Look at the datasheets for each to get an idea of the differences and similarities above 200 Hz.

As far as use WITH EQ, the 3015 is more amenable to being shaped a variety of different ways, and is way more graceful under pressure, and what it does translates better in a variety of venues.

Great info regarding the 3015 and the Orange - I would probably consider that route if the Orange weren't so dang expensive. You end up paying $650 for a cab plus another $150 for the driver, making it an $800 cab. Conversely, the S15D is around $420, so you could almost get a pair for the price of the upgraded Orange. For more low end performance, I just got quoted $520 for the custom order S15L-D (that was when ordering a pair, it would be a bit more for one). The L is a nice in-between size - 22-x18x18 - bigger than the regular cube, smaller than the big old B-D. It will be my next purchase, and I have a hunch may be the "perfect" 15" cab.

On another note, you should swing by into the current fEARful megathread and share a little about your preamp design. A lot of us are power amp users or contemplate it, and some deets, specs and impressions would set some heads a-twirl : }

Thanks! I'm a bit late to the fEarful party, but have been trying to tune in more lately. I'm thinking it would be killer to build one of these with say the Mimima One amp built in, and then just have my preamp with it. Along with my Warmoth basses, I could have a killer "no-name" rig!

Frankly you can get the TL606 box often for practically nothing with some crapped out driver in it from 30 years ago, and load it with any number of good candidates. Regional builders who didn't know their elbows from an L-pad used the EV plans to knock 'em out under various brand names. And you could arrive at a cheap solution to Mesa in the same fashion.

Just out of sheer theoretical interest. Is it a hard job to add correct insulance to a cab? In Europe, Orange cabs aren't THAT expensive and most of those OBC-115's I've seen were loaded with Kappa 15-A's.

Seems like the Orange would be more appealing over here.

It's easy to add DAMPING. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. Some people use staples, but I like spray glue better for either polyfil batting or open cell foam. You can be done in 10 minutes going in through the woofer cutout.

One other thing to note with the Orange cabs... these come with some of the softest, easily ripped tolex I've seen on anything. They look gorgeous when you pull em out of the box, but the nature of the orange tolex lends itself to scuffs... like those from the feet of your amp, for example. And the tolex itself tears if you breathe on it. All of my current cabs have tolex and show barely any wear, but for the price they ask on the Orange cabs, they really need to reconsider some better skin.

Here is my OBC 115 & my TL-606 with the "passinwind port mod. Both cabs have the 3015 speaker and fully isolated. I used white duratx on the 606, I had planned to have it tinted to be orange but it was to much hassle. The TL-606 is lighter and sounds better. I plan on building a fEarful 15-6. I'll stuff the stock speaker in the Orange and sell it to help pay for the 15-6.
The orange tolex is very soft. It tears & scuffs very easy.
