I've had the cab for a while now, so the cab has been well gigged and broken in. Any heads i've been using with it have been all tube. Any gigs I’ve done have been blues/rock and some ska/reggae.
When I first plugged it in i noticed it was a bit midrangey but was very clear and articulate. Over the first couple of gigs it has got a more balanced freq response by more bass being added, I assume from the speaker being broken in. Now, this cab i cannot fault sound wise for what I do.
If you don't like 15s you should try this and if you do like 15s you will love this one. This cab has authority and is quick for a 15.
Some gigs i had been stacking it with an old ampeg 410, but now i stopped doing that because the sound of my bass is more pure and articulate by using the 15 alone. I'm using a '75p bass.
It'll fill the room with pillowy bass while at the same time can sound mean and aggressive.
Produces a lovely growl when digging in with a tube amp. Although I found with a lot of distortion the ampeg 410 sounded better. The ampeg also sounds louder at the same amp volume but I think this is because it has more speaker area.
If you play with mids boosted it will bark at you but in a nice way, if you know what i mean. It’s hard for me to describe the sound of it but this cab has character, as in its strong and mean. This cab would give any high end cab a run for its money.
For example I did a gig last weekend standing in for another bass player. The band couldn’t get over the tone of the bass. ‘Why doesn’t our bass player sound like that’ they said. He’s a good player uses and a jazz w/ ampeg CL with a 410 and 15. I was using a Sound City 120B with just the obc115. But I think it was having my amp well cranked just before power tube breakup that did it but the cab definitely played its part. The drummer was using in ears and thought the bass was going through the pa for a while, which wasn’t the case.
This cab has no tweeter and I’m glad it doesn’t. Its frequency range goes high enough for me, goes up to maybe 3k?, I prefer to keep out of the high freq anyway, leave those freq to the other instruments. A lot of detail can be heard within its range. If you play in a 3 piece it’ll really fill the sound out. If you stand close to the cab while playing you can’t hear as much detail but will still hear yourself fine. I may stack or tilt it. If you boost the bass it has a very powerful sound/feel - it’s not muddy.
One negative is that the tolex on it is a bit soft. I’ve a small tear on the cab already.
Thick braced plywood and non neo. It’s compact for a 15. The cab is relatively portable compared to a 410 or even a neo 410. I used to use two 12s but this is easier.
I love playing live and even more so now because of this cab. What more can say?
