Double Bass Orchestra Pieces for an Inexperienced Orchestra

Hey,

I was wondering if you guys would have any good suggestions of pieces that the orchestra I'm in (small liberal arts with a small music program) could tackle. To get an understanding of our level, we last played Beethoven's 2nd Symph.

Hey, Try some of these pieces-

Beethoven- Egmont Overture, Symphony no. 8
Dvorak- Symphony 8, String Serenade Op. 22
Suppe- Poet and Pheasent Overture
Brahms- Acedemic Festival Overture
Tchaikovsky- Symphony No. 2 "Little Roman"

I played all these pieces either with my high school orchestra or with my youth orcestra so this gives you an idea if your group can handle them. Egmont Overture is a lot of fun.

Here's some stuff that we (the CYS) played last year that you can play.... A Night on Bald Mountain, La Forza del Destino, Dvorak 9th (M4). Well those are the good one's I don't want to bore you with the rest. And one thing we are playing this year thats good (and tough) is Scheherazade. I honestly am not in a position to give advice here but there is my 2 cents.

Look up "Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra" both volumes one and two. You can look at a whole range of repetoire that is categorized by numerical rating. These books are indispensible for the music teacher but might help you as well. Your school's library should have them or a music faculty member (but you could always fork over the cash)
