Orchestral/strings plugins/VST Recommendations

Oh, and while you're poking around the Spitfire site, take a look at LCO (London Contemporary Orchestra) Strings. It's not a new library and doesn't have legato or super-deep sampling, but I've gotten a lot of mileage out of it for "not regular" music. Not something to get for your first string library, maybe to mark as something to grab later on sale. LCO Textures are great, too.

That took me a long time. Then as I used them more, I realized that many (not all) of the instruments are quite shallowly sampled, and I wanted something deeper for my uses. I definitely do not install everything - specially all those production packs. No doubt Spitfire, the Vienna folks and the LA strings you have referred to are the better ones. Even with Spitfire the intro BBC is not the same as the premium. It could be an addiction like basses - he he

The other MIDI hand control Christian Henson talks about is the Ghost Note Audio Conductor. I think he prefers the Ghost Note Audio than the Monogram controller. I guess you could map three faders on on a MIDI keyboard controller which might get you the same functionality.

+1 for BBCSO from Spitfire. I snagged the Pro version in the early days when they were giving it away.

The plugin itself should install to the proper place by default. The sample content can be moved to wherever, you just have to point the Spitfire app to it.

Logic will sometimes simply not register that you’ve installed a new plugin. A reboot usually fixes it.

I’ve shut everything down for the night. Neither the Arturia Mellotron V nor Abbey Road 2 are showing up as options in Logic so far. Near as I can the applications are correctly installed on my laptop, with the libraries on my external SSD. Logic just isn’t seeing either instrument.

Just going through the troubleshooting list, apologies if you've tried these already. I'll use Abbey Road Two as my example, but the process is the same for Mellotron V.

When adding a track to Logic, choose a MIDI instrument track. Click the instrument slot, then mouse over 'AU Instruments', then 'Spitfire Audio', then click 'Abbey Road Two'. You can also, in one of the newest updates, simply do a search in the instrument slot. If you can't find it, then...

Go to the 'Logic Pro' menu in the top left, then mouse to 'Settings' and click 'Plug-in Manager'. You can scroll through the 'Show All' list until you find it, look through the 'Manufacturer' list, or do a search for the instrument in here. If you locate the plugin and it says 'couldn't be opened' or 'failed validation' in the 'Compatibility' column, select it and click the 'Reset & Rescan Selection' button. If you don't find it, click 'Full Audio Unit Reset' and see if it shows up. If it still doesn't show up, then...

In Finder, click the 'Go' menu at the top and select 'Go to Folder'. In the dialog that pops up, type in (or copy/paste) "/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components" without the surrounding quotation marks. In the folder that comes up, ensure there is a file called 'Abbey Road Two.component'. If it's not there, then...

Open the Spitfire Audio app and click on the Abbey Road Two icon. Ensure that all the listed downloads show as installed. If so, click the 'repair' button next to each download.


Regarding the slowness of the Arturia Software Center, they released the next version of their very popular Pigments soft synth today. It's very possible that their servers are taking a huge hit currently.
