Origin Effects Halcyon Green Overdrive

Origin Effects announced last week their new product, the Halcyon Green Overdrive, which is modelled after the Ibanez Tube Screamer. I'm curious to see if it is viable on bass as it is designed for guitar. Anyone with disposable income and a forgiving spouse care to test and report back?

It has a dry blend so my guess is it would fair ok on bass.

Honestly, if I were looking for a Tubescreamer for bass, my first stop would be the Becos Ziffer.

Sonically, I couldn’t say. Haven’t been after a tubescreamer, personally. But the Becos has a clean blend that also has a tilt EQ on it, which is not a common occurrence.

Edit: as a side note, Becos FX seems to have fallen off the face of the earth. Their website is blank, and their Instagram and Twitter accounts appear to be gone.

Im a big fan of the Cusack. It’s a great little pedal on bass. I haven’t used it in a few years because I haven’t had the need for a heavier OD sound, but I won’t sell it either.

Somewhat unfortunately, I think this pedal is a keeper for me. I was kinda hoping I’d send it back only had a few minutes to test it, but the combination of the “adapt” and “dry” controls mean this pedal works just fine on bass. Turning off “adapt” drops all the low end like a normal tube screamer. So far my (rather low) expectations have been exceeded. This is what I wanted the Origin RevivalDrive to sound like (I sent that one back).

But to be clear, the RevivalDrive is great and is a much better amp-in-a-box than the Halcyon, as that is it's purpose. But I tried to use the RevivalDrive as an overdrive and it just didn't work for me (and the BassRigs are better for bass as amp sims). The Halcyon is simpler, and keeps more of my bass tone. It drives the mids, without being overly harsh or dropping the lows. It does exactly what I'm in the mood for at the moment.

I've only tested with my Quad Cortex, running it into a Hiwatt Dr103 amp model with a Bergantino cabsim.

That's good news and bad news for me. If you like it, I'm likely to cave quickly. Which is, as I stated, both good and bad news at the same time.
