Original Material

I'm not a song writer and nobody else is in my band. So, naturally we don't do originals. But the thought dawned on me the other day "why do they have to be written by a band member? Why not just an up and coming song writer?"

I know one person who has some really good material. He writes bits and pieces of songs constantly and has about 80-100 originals. I asked this guy if my band could play some of them, also asking him if it would be okay if I did some arranging on them. He said it was okay, so I'm pretty jazzed about that. He has some nice, simple, catchy songs with great hooks and nice wordsmithing. I'd like to do maybe 2 per set and see where it goes from there. Don't know if there are any ASCAP issues I need to know about or not. I told the guy I couldn't pay him, but I would plug him each time we did one of his songs (he's local).

Just wondering if anybody else out there solicits material from song writers, maybe even ones they don't know, and performs the material.

Actually that sounds really cool. Some of the best original stuff I've been apart of is when I played someone elses original. What happens is that you see the gems as far as what are the best sound and you get to add on your own twist and make it better (usually). Also, you don't have to wonder if it's good just because you wrote it, when you hear someone elses stuff and like it, you know it's good.

I'd say just make a deal with him that if you guys do something he get an equal cut like a bandmember would.

Yeah, all we would be doing is playing his stuff live, but if it ever got to a recording level, I would want him to have 100% of any kind of "split"...it's his material and I just wouldn't have it any other way, even if I had a choice about it.
