Other people’s rigs!

I had a lovely holiday jazz quartet show yesterday. I’ve become friends with a respected upright bassist and teacher who was playing a set after mine at the same event.

He graciously offered to get there early (and secure the prime parking / loading spot lol) and thus allow me to use his entire rig during my set.

Older Czech bass, Schertler dual element pups, Genz Benz shuttle 6.2, acme low B 2x10 cab.

Dang this rig brought the serious booty.

It took me a few songs to figure out where all the notes were on this fine instrument. But after I got my act together - holy smokes - the low end - the volume - the authority!

I now see what all the fuss is about regarding Genz Benz heads and especially the Acme cab.

I hadn’t ever heard anyone use a Schertler before but my wheels are seriously spinning on a future pup upgrade. How can two janky cork elements translate such massive bottom without a hint of feedback???

We got to talking about how we collect all these seemingly disparate pieces over the years - and how they become indispensable in unlikely combinations. It’s a mystery!

What’s your rig of doom that always brings the boom? Bonus points for Schertler users that get me all GAS’d up lol.

A Kolstine Busetto Travel Bass, Ehrlund EAP, into a RedEye Twin, with A GR Bass AT Cube Acoustic. ACME Low B’s are and were amazing cabinets and the Shuttle 6.2 are as they say “rare as hens teeth”

Nothing sounds like an ACME cab, nothing!

B2s are slightly darker than a pair of B1s due to only one tweeter and mid. A pair of B1s is more crisp for upright. I own both. After purchasing and selling 25+ different cabs, I'm not going back. I don't care about wieght or the latest hipster specs, I just want killer bottom end and they deliver every time. I still rememeber the first day I borrowed a pair of B1s and a Thunderfunk head for a gig and my band was astonished at the difference in sound.

GK MB200 with one of my preamps, into a homemade 1x8 with Faital 8PR200 driver.

This is the first rig I've played that regularly gets compliments from band and audience members, though I'd prefer to believe that it's because of my playing.

I'd gig a combo, but I have a compulsion for completely understanding how my gear works, and I enjoy making things.

This rig gets loud enough for all of my upright bass work, including the 19 piece jazz orchestra.

Out of curiosity, why doesn't Acme tell you what size drivers their B series cabs use?!? No mention of it anywhere on the B1, B2 or Wedgie pages.

chart for the Series III than gives
the driver sizes.

Shen 5-string flatback willow 7/8 (with new Despiau triple tree bridge!), Yamahiko stock dual element, Tonedexter 2, AI Clarus 600W, Barefaced SMT.

Just got the new cab in and the new bridge setup is still settling — feels like “someone else’s rig” as it breaks in, but I’m beyond pleased. Effortless MBOL.

Do we say “endgame” here like the headphone nerds do?
