Hey TalkBass - I wanted to ask a question / get some opinions and information about an outlandish mod I have for one of my basses.
So the question is:
I have an Ibanez EHB 1505 Dragon Burst that I wanted to mod. These mods are for what ifs and solely for making the best tones for recording while traveling the lightest musical equipment setup as possible. I wanted to make it a passive J bass setup BUT add a XLR and DI setup inside the bass. The Neutrik setup on the input jack makes a perfect location for a XLR to be added. So having a DI setup inside the bass with just a passive VVT with Input and Kill Switch may be the way to go. My main questions can be boiled down to essentially would I need a 9 volt or more powerful battery setup for a strong DI built into the bass as well as would this actually be practical for recording and playing live?
I bring this bass anywhere I am traveling because it is so easy to just bring it in a guitar case and throw in the overhead compartment of a plane. Anywhere I am going to for more than the weekend I bring it. But mainly the idea came from a cruise I was lucky enough to go on and got talking to one of the duet groups (singer and pianist) - the conversation led to them inviting me to play on a set and that is where this idea arose from. I didn't want to dimmish their sound by accident in any way since this is a paying gig for them and fun for me, but I wanted to play with them. Regardless, I wanted to figure out having a clean, robust, and big sound while not needing a DI box with my bass.
For context. I am thinking of it like being able to plug into a unit like an Avalon U5 or a UA 610 Solo (My DI combo) then the PA system so - how can I get a similar setup *WITHOUT* needing one of those units in conjunction with the bass. Is it possible? Should I figure out a system with a Tube in it like those weird 80's instruments with Tubes inside them????? I don't know! I am thinking out loud and would like to hear other bass players input on this idea and what the downsides / upsides of something like this being implemented? This may be outlandish but honestly, I am just curious if it is possible? I know guys like Janek and Anthony have XLR outputs on their Fodera's so does it make sense but am I better packing one pair of shoes and a DI box just in case?
