Double Bass Output from composers

This discussion took place last night, interested to hear, from those that care to weigh in, the answer to this question - was the output of great composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, etc. limited by their own lack of creativity or by the limited amount of transcribers available to capture the music? In other words, had programs like Finale being available at the time, would we have seen a lot more music available to us?

The answer to all of those questions is no.

IMO, no not at all.

What the software does is transfer the work form one field to another.

Before, composers would hand sketch stuff, then their apprentices would hand sketch it again, but more slowly and more legibly for players. Then of course other humans would re-copy it for the publishers, more people involved in the printing etc.

Now one person at home alone can get a superior printed output using technology. The labour now is in software developing, hardware developing, tech support ect.

The inspiration work is not really faster with the software, the grunt work is faster. But the old composers did the inspiration work, and left the grunt work for others to do. IMO...
