My '54 Kay has always been a little strong on the D string regardless of the brand. Any tips for correcting this?

Double Bass over-responsive D string

Lower the string height of the D in relation to the other strings - this helped a lot on two of my basses with too-powerful D strings. Keep in mind, I'm a pizz-only player, so if you bow, my advice might not be good for you.
Have you taken it to a luthier to get it checked out? As Chris said, you could change the profile of the bridge to lower just the D string. Or it could possibly be related to moving the sound post. Ask an experienced pro luthier to be sure.
