Overdrive

Have you tried a Danelectro Wasabi Overdrive?

I haven't seem them in stores lately, but they are still available pretty cheap on ebay. The nice thing about the Wasabi Overdrive (and Distortion) is they have a clean blend functionality. Works very nicely on bass. Also includes a separate booster.

Also, I have the PD-7 (Phat Hed) and dig it. I found the best sounds are when the volume on the bass is backed off to 7 or less, and then you use the output of the pedal to regain the lost level.

I've got a 2nd I'm hoping to mod so I can get this sound without turning down the bass.

The Danelectro Pastrami is also a great bass overdrive, and often available for less than $20.

:( So you are not too happy with that one. Do you have any experience with the VT1-HP-bass pedal or is that just another name for the same thing?

Not sure if thats just an older version of the VT1 Purist, I'm sure someone on here could correct me or Dave himself will be able to tell you. If I could afford it I'd probably go for two and replace the ts-9 or maybe go for one of his dual pedals.
