Overloading input on Zoom B2.1u?

Well I've always seemed to struggle with my Zoom B2.1u for some reason. Playing it through varous amps, with my hot output basses, I seem to have issues with some distortion in the signal. It seems ok with my lower output basses (which I think are too low). But, for example, on my Sadowsky, with the volume up to around 8 out of 10, the sound is like I am clipping the pedal or something.

Is the only solution to turn down my bass and turn up the zoom output?

No, it's not the only solution, but it's probably the simplest. I just learnt that the B2.1u is 'rated' for -20dBm input signals and the input impedance is 1 Megohm. This means that the max signal voltage is approximately 3V. That's disappointingly easy to obtain even with a passive bass - albeit only during transients.
