Overthinking². What is a Preamp ?

After reading through a recent thread here, discussing the merits of a DI output on a preamp pedal, I realized that there seems to be lots of different opinions on what is, and is not, a preamp pedal.

I do think that before a valid discussion can happen on the actual topic (in that case if a DI is good or bad on a preamp), there needs to be consensus on what a preamp is and what a preamp is not.
In all of the (bass) pedal family, the term preamp is the most opaque.

A chorus is easily defined, same as a phaser or a compressor. With dirt pedals, it's already a bit harder. While we make a distinction between overdrive, distortion and fuzz, many overdrive pedals sound like a fuzz with very high gain and some fuzz pedals sound like an overdrive with very low gain, and some overdrives border on distortion and some distortions sound just like high gain overdrives - but at the end of the day, we manage. Everyone seems to agree on how each of these pedals sounds in its pure form and it's possible to understand a statement like "this is an overdrive, but it starts sounding like a distortion when you run the gain higher than 3 o'clock".

Looking at what a preamp does outside of bass guitar pedals, it's quite clear what necessarily has to happen: Amplification, but not to speaker level.

The device that drives the thing that makes the air vibrate (speakers, headphones, shakers) is simply called an amp, no "pre" attached.


But got that thing that takes a signal and puts out more of it in the pedal world. It's called a booster.
So there has to be more to it. Or has there?

Where is the term "preamp" coming from when it comes to bass pedals? Here's me, trying my hand at an explanation:

Simple. It's coming from bass amps. Bass amps are not all the same, but what they share is that essentially, they have two "sections", the preamp section and the power amp section (bass amp techs: Please forgive me for the layman's terms). The power amp section usually only does convert the (line level) signal to something so powerful, it drives speakers. Of course, the tube amp fraction pipes up now and cries "but we do drive our amps into saturation and the interaction between power tubes, output transformer and speaker is an integral part of our sound!" .... but for the sake of my argument, they shall be ignored.
It's usually not a good idea to ignore someone used to lugging a 100lbs amp head up and down two flights of stairs twice a week for rehearsals, but I'm trying to get somewhere. So in your modern amp with a solid state power section, all the "tone shaping" and pre amplification happens in the front half of the amp head, and that usually is referred to as the preamp. Some companies even went as far as doing both versions of the thing. A pedal and an amp head, with the same name and (near) identical controls. Off the top of my head, there is the Tone Hammer by Aguilar, the Mesa Subway, The Noble Preamp DI / Noble amp ... just to name a few. But, here is where it gets tricky. If we simply agree that a preamp pedal emulates the front end of an amp, then what does this entail?
The only thing all bass heads' preamp bits have in common is that they take an instrument level signal and amplify it to a level strong enough to drive the power amp. But we have that covered. That's a booster pedal. Some amp heads come fully decked out with graphic EQ, drive capabilities, tuner and compression. Some come as minimal as you can imagine. Gain and master. Some strive to be as transparent as possible, with the EQ at noon there's no audible difference to the dry signal while others impart a strong flavor on your signal no matter what you set the knobs at.
Some amps clip in a very unpleasant way when you set the gain too high, while others sound and feel like they are made for drive.
The same goes for DI capabilities. Amps mostly have a DI out, but it's not a necessary piece of kit.

This is me, trying to define a preamp:
A bass preamp pedal is essentially a booster, with either some means of EQ or a baked in tone.
Optional, but not necessary features include but are not limited to DI out, dirt, compression, tuner.

...but that's not a helpful definition at all.
 
If it can drive a power amp, it's a preamp IMO. I've even seen some Overdrive or Boost pedals referred to as "Preamps" in their product name or descriptions.

My non-technical definition/opinion would say it requires both some tone shaping and signal level control (Gain, Master, etc.) to be a proper preamp (again, IMO). Any company that neglects to include a DI-Out on their preamp pedal is missing a key feature for many bass players.
 
That's how I've always seen and used a preamp pedal as, a boost with some added gain, EQ and flavor from said preamp. I came to believe that the EQ on said preamp added EQ to the flavor of that preamp. Over the years I've used and tried a handful. I used a DG B7K and a Submarine/Icetino for years. Then a rusty box (which I still use today rather it be the actual one or a model in the quad cortex). For me, I liked the using a preamp because it gave me flavor and boost. I use an all tube power unit so it really does add a lot.

I stacked preamps for years until I found out the hard way that I was squashing my tone. Too many gain stages in the signal path. I still do to a degree. Just not as much as I used to.

I've also used the Whirlwind bass X EQ. To me, that thing is a preamp just as much as it is an EQ and boost. Sure, it's categorized as an EQ. But it sculps and boosts the signal in a very broad way IMO.
 
This another one of those terms ('preamp') that gets batted around by users (and ad-speak promo depts) sort of willy-nilly, like 'active pickups' which often can correctly or incorrectly what's going on under the hood (and WTH, they feature . . . preamp(s) for the pickups!).

In my day it was easier: Ya got a rack, a Yamaha PB1, a Demeter, etc., and right underneath it you had a commercial power amp like Crown or Yamaha, etc.
Couldn't plug the bass straight into a Crest CA9, and plug it into the rack preamp without a power amp inline, you got nothing. Simple.

Today, the term, indeed, gets batted around in many ways.

Get an Audere or John East preamp for your pickups.

Plug your bass into an Avalon or Manley or any of many mic channel strips as a preamp to go into a recording board or amp an A/D converter.

Or you buy a preamp pedal to plug inline from the bass to the front panel of my bass amp which is the preamp section of the head.

And on and on. Dizzy yet? I am.
 
I'm not an electrical engineer, but perhaps there is a difference in how the amplitude of the signal is increased when it comes to booster pedals versus preamplifiers? Both increase the voltage, of course, but maybe they do different things with current? If so, that would be another, more technical way to delimit a preamplifer and distinguish it from a boost pedal with EQ. But maybe there is no difference... Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me in this area can chime in.
 
When I read “preamp pedal” I think of the tone shaping part of an amp without the actual amplification stage.

By that logic, the best way to use it would be either in combination with a cab sim or plugging it into the return of an amp’s effects loop.
 
OK, that's one person's definition of a "preamp".

I'm not going to attempt a definitive definition (hmm...) but I will suggest a reason that we have "preamps" popping up everywhere:

There are a lot of us that play without using amps nowadays, and the signal modification stuff that we used to get from an amp/cab setup...we still want/need to get a decent sound to send to FOH. So, whether that is from a few pedals each doing their part, or one pedal doing al the parts, we need "preamp" functionality in our rigs.
 
Easy minimum requirement:

It goes before the amp. Signal goes into it, signal comes out of it.

That’s it.

The level (amplitude) of the signal coming out is dependent on the specific design of the preamp. Some preamps output a LOWER level signal than the input signal.

The impedance of input and output is dependent on the design of the preamp.


The type of preamp you need (not want..) is dictated by:

1. The source, and signal level produced by the source.

2. The amplifier; the range of signal levels it is designed to receive and the impedance it is designed to ‘see’ when something is plugged into its input (and finally, for completeness, the frequency range the amplifier is designed to accommodate.)

These days, nearly all bass heads have an integrated pre-amplifier and can accommodate a wide range of input levels by including an ‘input’ level adjustment. Many include an impedance switch (often hidden behind an ‘active/passive’ input switch).

For me personally, I like the compressor after the preamp and other effects so I use a DI like the JDI that is purpose built as a DI. The onboard DI would be wasted on me. So it’s different for different players and uses. The DCX bass is the best sounding preamp I’ve ever had and that is way more valuable to me personally than a DI out. Ymmv
 
I really wasn't all that interested in preamp pedals in the beginning. It just duplicated what I could already do on my bass amplifier. One of the first pedals I ever bought was a passive DI. I really didn't need anything else.

However, once I started playing through powered cabs or going straight into a PA or FOH... preamps became much more important to me. Now I have a moderate understanding of terms like "input sensitivity".

You are describing a patch bay also


You need to define what the nominal signal voltage that the power amp or integrated amp requires and if ther preamp is capable of delivering that,

Best example is the Jay Ganz power amp. The Bazss Bone, the Ampeg Classic pedal were incapable of driving this preamp. even the particle accelerator at min gain barely did . The ZIO, Nux and Aleemnic do. So I have to classify the others as EQ pedals

My first exposure to the term was around 1962 when my father built a Dynaco stereo system (which went into AR3a speakers, Acoustic Research was nearby I think) and back when Radio Shack was pre-Tandy, a room filled with open boxes and was the place you went to test your tubes... So there were 2 boxes that resulted, both had a gold front plate with dials, buttons, and perforated casing for cooling. The top one was the "preamp". It was just a word, and like a lot of things my father said, had no meaning to me, age 6. Eventually I found out that the preamp was what took a signal from a "tuner" (am-fm radio) or from the turntable, and made those signals legible to the amplifier below. Later I learned that without a preamp and it's eq "curve", a turntable was crazy un-amplifiable and sounds nothing like the sound we hear, JPJones's bass wasn't in the grooves of the record, it's added at the preamp.

I think you are right about confusion using the term for a line booster with characteristic sounds available.

preamps have several gain stages. booster pedal is a single gain stage.

This is accurate IMO. That's why my #1 choice of preamp pedal, the Xotic RC Booster, is actually quite accurately named, even though it confuses some people shopping for a "preamp" and they pass over it!

Actually I think this is pretty good. There are a lot of different preamps out there but the common thread between them is that they provide some means to sculpt the tone, either in the background with a baked-in EQ and/or with adjustable frequency bands or filters. Not all preamps necessarily have a built in gain/volume feature, if you consider something like an onboard preamp on a Stingray or other active bass - but the bass does have a volume knob, and turning up the preamp frequency knobs will boost the overall signal.

I wouldn't consider the tuner to be part of the preamp itself, if it's a pedal that also has a tuner then it's a multi-purpose peda, even if it's all contained within one box. Dirt often comes as part of a preamp if it's trying to emulate a tube distortion, and technically that is also compressing the signal - but if the pedal has a separate built-in compressor, then again it's an effect added to the preamp rather than part of the preamp itself. I'm separating these from the basic function of a preamp because there are a lot of multi effect pedals like the Tech21 Fly Rigs that include a preamp along with other effects, but the preamp itself is a distinct part of that. I realize it sounds like I'm sort of splitting hairs here but just like an amplifier has a preamp section and a power amp section, a preamp pedal can have an effects section as well as a preamp section!
