Double Bass Overtones with Velvets

One thing I noticed with the Velvets(garbo or anima), is that they take 2-3 weeks to really settle down. I have never really liked the sound right out of the package as they have so many overtones and kind of sound hollow. But as they break in they really start to develope a really nice tone. Its a different tone than most other strings.

I'm having the same problem as the OP but with a Carlos Chorda E string. Very nasty overtones obscuring the fundamental, very pronounced when amplified.
Contacted the good folks at pirastro and they sent me a replacement E string no questions asked, great customer support.
But... The replacement E string sound exactly the same.. Couldn't have gotten two bad string in a row could i?

Tips, suggestions anyone? Helicore and spiro E strings sound fine on my bass, so i guess it definitely is a string related issue.
