Wow! I hope Mister Barrington pans out for Owen Biddle because is certainly leaving a good paycheck behind!
I am looking forward to hearing Mark Kelly. The Roots are in St. Louis today, I wonder if Mark Kelly is at that gig?

Wow, I can't imagine making that move but who knows what goes on behind the scenes.

I can't wrap my mind around how or why anybody would step off a gig like The Roots. I could understand leaving a popular, long established headlining band with a standing talk show TV job if you have writer's credit on a few #1 hits of your own happening at the time you decide to leave, but not if you really don't.
Like anything else, there's dynamics, situations, and circumstances we aren't privy to, though.

Mark is a beast of a player and was playing with Meshell Ndegeocello and John Scofield as well. He's from good ole Houston, TX! Way to go, Mark!
I had the opportunity to see the Roots with Hub and then again with Owen.
Sad to see him go, but excited to see the dynamic that Mark brings to the table.
Hub was pretty much it for me for a long time.

I never listened to the Roots before a couple weeks ago when I checked out one of their cd's on a whim. (Roots and John Legend, Wake Up!) Some of the songs I really liked, others not so much, but I did discover Owen Biddle. Monster player! Dig that guy!
I wondered what had happened to him. He had recently been featured in Bass Player magazine and had the cover. He was hilarious on the Housewives of late night on Jimmy Fallon. He is super talented but has been replaced by a really talented musician as well. I think Owen just wanted to do his own thing. But that steady paycheck! And to play with The Roots! I could not ever give that up!
Maybe he couldnt stand that Sousaphone blowing in his ear anymore...hey...just throwing it out there...LOL
I wonder if Owen will have to give back all of his John Varvatos clothes... It will be interesting to watch what he moves on with...

I love the playing on that Mr. Barrington video. Really live and aggressive feeling. Loose in vibe but tight in groove. they gotta lose those auto-tune vocals though. That almost made it un-listenable for me.
Owen's a monster - I'm sure he can pick up a paycheck if this thing doesn't work. Leaving the Roots doesn't mean dude won't get paid.

I love The Roots, always have, but I can see why Owen could possibly want to leave. I would assume That their busy schedule, with the TV show, and benefit concerts, and rehearsing, and filming, well it wouldn't leave much time for other creative endeavours. also Mr Barrington is probably at the stage where they would benefit from a long tour. The Roots schedule wouldn't allow for that! but that's just a guess.

I saw them with Hub and with Owen, I much preffered the groove style of hub to the chops style of Owen. Hoping mark Kelley brings the groove back and keeps the licks at home.
He does groove. And as far as throwing a few licks out there, maybe that's what the band wants.
He does have the gig for a reason.
