P and J difference neckwise

i have never played a jazz before but a pbass thickness at nut is 1 5/8 a jazz 1 1/2 thats only an eight of an inch difference.So whats all this about jazz having a slim neck.

what are some more differences?

do they make a bass with a slimmer neck or is that it?

An 8th inch does make a felt diff. But a lot of P basses have been 1.75 inch wide at nut making them 1/4 inch wider. Some are also a little thicker top of fretboard to back of neck. I'm pretty sure most if not all the 70's fender single P pup basses where 1.75 nut width.

An eigth of an inch is a lot when you are talking about such a small total amount. There are only 14 eights of an inch in 1.75", so that's a signifigant percentage.

Yeah, those older P-basses feel like surfboards to me...

I quite like the newer spacing... Dandy for slap.

seems like Jazz necks were all over the map too. I don't have any specs, but I've certainly played some that felt thinner than others

Nut width is only one component of neck feel. The neck contour and thickness has an impact on how the neck feels when you're playing it.

It has alot to do with string spacing . I cant really play jazz necks comfortably

Don't forget 'board radius..flatter board makes it seem larger IMO.
