Rex Dog,Yep it’s a mystery…Greetings from the North,
The rounded covers just have that extra swanky look to them. And just may help the sound a little bit too ;-)
I don't know the time periods of when issued.

I also have this doubt. Why different covers? Which cover corresponds to which period? I prefer the square cover, but I only find the round one, I don't like it. Fender specialists and historians, speak up.

Any one know the Different Types of Fender Precision Bass Pick-up Covers ? Time period and Why???
Yeah I believe the round version was the first reissue version but they started reissuing the square version around 2013 to be more period correct to the original. The one on the left that has the cover that's flatter across the top and has flat sections on the sides is era correct for per-CBS. They continued that way through the mid and late '60s until I don't know when.
The Fender AVRI P's I've seen have the rounder kind on that's on the black bass to the right.
I happen to have one of those rounder ones binned in my Fender bass parts drawer. I don't care for it.

I'm sure the difference has to do with how the magnets interact with the vibration of the strings. Marcus Miller explains it here from 5:16 to 5:29.
Glad you appreciated it, lolLove this one!!lol

Ok But look at this :'Square' were original starting in '57 and through the 60's. The round ones were 70's (not sure of exact introduction - and there was probably a crossover period where both were used) and later.
It's confused some as a lot of pre-CBS ones had later replacements added later.

Early 60’s Custom Color P-Basses ….U can Clearly See There’s Flat ones and Round Ones….
….I thought the CandyApple ones on the far right looks like round typeI don't see any of those as looking like the rounder type. There is some curve to the 'flat' ones just not nearly as much as the 70's-80's type.
