Can i say though that not all ears are the same and and not all hands are the same, and that a bass that you feel sound great and plays great could sound and play crap to others, me included.

From my experience i have really rarely (but it happened i admit) played a squier that i thought was a bass i would play at home or at a gig.
Be it a vintage modified or a classic vibe they all felt pretty cheap and i was never convinced by the sound...
I have never understood the fuss about them cause for me they are just decent beginners bass and feel that way. If you are used to playing half decent basses they feel and sound pretty bad.

Now, that is my experience and my opinion, if you like your bass and feel like it does the job for you thats great!
The OP was asking for advice, i told him what I would do in his position.

Funny, I've played $1000+ basses and there are Squiers I prefer to them. The Amber VM P bass being the king of the Squiers I've played. It's the only sub-$300 bass I've played that I believe rivals basses that are more than $1000.

But, it still doesn't compare to the American Standard P bass I played at Guitar Center, so I definitely would not say it beats every bass in that price range. Just some of them.

Personally I have 3 squiers and each with different pickups. It just comes down to what kind of sound do you want.
Ex: p-bass w/ash body.....SPB-1 OR Antiguity II
p-bass w/Alder body.....SPB-3
PJ bass w/Agathis body.....SPB-3 & STK-J2b
Each gave me a different tone but each sounds great.
Just a thought...Good Luck...
(I personally would just put a Quality pickup in and have fun playing it all night long..)
