Got the mini P-bass finished this weekend - apart from a bit of a setup and a fret level.
Here Billy is finishing the bridge installation.

I've just put a standard set of discarded 40 - 100 strings on. They do sound a bit 'tubby' but there's a nice deep P-bass punch to them too! This is his first bass lesson.

OK - I can't even see the pics of Al's mini bass and I already wanna build one (or two) for my kids (ages, 7 and 8)!!!!

Curse you, Al Heeley! Just when I was getting started on my next Z Bass build you come along with this great project...

I think I gotta start planning some mini-basses (28" - 30" scale) for my kids. I want them to be able to get into bass and I don't think they'll do it on one of my old, full-sizers. Plus building them - what could be more fun, huh?

A while ago, I did build my 3 1/2 year old son a 2/3 scale bass. He likes it but never playes it It fits his size perfectly though.
The scale length is a true 2/3 of 34", so 22.666". I had to use guitar strings because of the guitar tuners that I used. Needless to say, it sounds far from a true bass. Fun to play,and it feels absolutely tiny, but getting the right string tension for a desired tuning is hard.
If anything, make it a short scale of 30". A seven year old can easily play in that range ( 22" scale is like a toy, I really mean it ), and you will a get a much better sound.
