P-Bass - Good or Bad???

Which makes me wonder - what does the custom shop have in it, that the regular P doesn't? Is it a custom wound pickup?
Your example of a P vs J based on your friend and his band could be related to a large amount of factors unrelated to the bass itself.

I think you would have to put a J and P in the mix on the same song to really have a halfway decent comparison.

Well, the coolest thing about a P is that you can beat someone over the head with it and it will probably still be in tune and play great. Also, SO MUCH depends on the amplifier that you can't really judge the P by itself. It's a combination of the two.
I've noticed it on more than one occasion, with more than one bassist. I just happened to use the most recent example.
Also, it was a sound check, and they played all the songs again with the Jazz bass, and it sounded much, much better. Very noticeable by the sound guys and the band leader.
Each was a stock American Deluxe Fender.

I thought they were distinctly middle aged by now and not some stupid teens...they still feel the need to do stuff like that?

That's not really a traditonal P bass then is it? What with the active electronics and bridge humbucker.
FWIW I love a good P bass and I have no use for a bridge single coil. A bridge humbucker, however, is another story.
Whoops! My bad. The P Bass was an American Standard - no bridge pickup.
The Jazz was also an American Standard.
I had to call him to make sure - he doesn't like Active basses. I forgot that the Deluxe models are Active.
I do like active basses though - and I'm intrigued by the Deluxe P-bass model with the J in the bridge. I need to look for one around here.
I love P-basses...but I'm with the guy that said he's gotta have a jazz bridge pickup. It just makes a good thing better.
Maybe your buddy had the eq settings on his amp dialed in for the Jazz bass? In my world, a Precision sits in the mix much better than a Jazz, and the people I've played with always prefer the Precision sound.
p bass..maybe the most recorded bass ever..love the p bass and the j bass sound.always have.i dont like them cause they just dont sit right or feel right on me...great bass simple as!!
