P bass hum.

I got an old P bass copy made in 1973 and it hums. I thought that P pups didn't hum? Is there any type of spray I can use for this or will I have to take it in to the shop?

You need to pull your pickguard and check the wiring on the input jack! Good luck!

When you touch the strings or the bridge does the hum go away? If so this could be a grounding problem. Cincy bassman is right though, it could also be wiring. My advice, since p basses are pretty simple, is to take the whole thing apart and make sure all the connections are solid, especially the ground.

After rewiring my Squier, I experienced the same thing. Make sure the ground to the bridge has a good connection.

I'm sure the problem is a loose ground, but just a thought, if I may.

My old Tiesco, a 1965 NB-4 would hum up a storm. We tried everything, even swaping amps.

We took everything apart and ended up resoldering everything...

We played out on the boat...

I have a fairly new Ibanez SRX-705 that frickin hums like a banshee when ever i am not touching the strings, i'm assuming i should use the same advice given to big bass 94' ??

It also has active pickups, does that make a difference?(replace battery maybe?)

Don't know about active pups, but I do know from some of my older radio gear on the boat, that if it isn't matched up, you can get humming. Could this be the case here???

I've owned an Ibanez SRX300, which is close to the bottom of the SRX line. I never had any hum, at all. I also don't get any hum from the active MEC single coils on my Corvette. My point is, I don't think any active pickups will really hum. If I'm not mistaken though, the SRX line has passive pickups with an active preamp... but even then, they're humbuckers, and I never had any hum from a a low-end bass with the same style pickups.

I honestly couldn't tell you what the problem is since I suck with electronics, but I've never experienced any hum through my SRX bass, so I thought you should know.

You could try replacing the battery... I don't think that would do anything though, but if you have a spare 9v around, you could definately give it a shot. Also, are you near any type of screen? Like a TV or computer monitor when you play? My SRX300 would always get a slight bit of interference from my TV and or computer monitor if either (or both) were on.

Well,I guess it is a grounding problem because when I tuch the strings it stops humming. I dont have a soldering iron or much experience.

My 4 day old SX P?J bass has a hum from hell. Cant take it anymore....but... if i can avoid the old...return ...exchange...pay for another....have the 1st purchase refunded story..i would like to do that .who knows what to do to help this newb?

... NO fluorescent lights are on..computer off..APC ground ($75) breaker circuited - 115 jewel extension cable system.

It is so bad i shut off my tweeter on my Bassman 150 to just try and deal with it!

You know that the j pickup is a single coil and will hum when turned up? You won't be able to completely eliminate it, but you can do a couple of things to minimize it. You can shield the j pu cavity. You can keep the volume down on it. Turning down your cabinet tweeter is a good thing too, the 12" speaker will give you plenty of highs.

I never had or heard a MIM P pup hum. No a P bass pup should not hum at all. In fact after i moved form Jazz basses to P basses the great thing besides the tone was no hum..dead quiet...check your wiring or grounds.
