P-Bass or J-Bass?

I curently play a Jazz bass as i always asumed that P-Bass ment precision like using a pick and jazz was for fingers and slap.

but that cant be right can it?
what are the deffinitions of P-Bass and J-Bass and what seperates them from eachother?

The Fender "Precision" Bass was given the name because (for all intents and purposes) up until that point, "bass" referred to an upright, fretless bass and it was now "precise" because it had frets, allowing for easier sounding of the notes.

The Fender "Jazz" Bass was given its name because it was styled after and supposed to be a compliment to the Fender Jazzmaster guitars.

The names have absolutely nothing to do with how you play them or what you play on them.

The differences don't matter. You should have, at least, one of each.

The Jazz bass can only be used for Jazz music. Hence, the name.

The Precision must only be played precisely. Wrong notes will cause the bass to implode.

I slapped a P bass once. I promised I would never do it again, said that I lost my temper and it had been a hard day at work. I even bought it flowers and took it out for dinner. But I did it again, and again.........

Would a Jazz bass help me here?
