P bass pickups for stoner/doom rock

I'm looking to mod my MIJ fender jaguar by swapping the neck jazz pickup for a P pickup. Ive always preferred the tone of a P in the genre of stoner and doom but have always wanted a cherry red MIJ jag with the color matched headstock. I recently picked up my dream bass (at least one of them, still need a midnight blue Ric 4003...) in my Jag but I find myself loving the tone of my buddys MIM P bass a lot more when we did a side by side comparison. Since this bass is a forever bass id like to go ahead and have a P pickup installed and do a few changes to the switchery. What pickups do you guys like? I'm looking for the super vintage, smooth, dead string tone I hear on some peoples basses when running clean.

I like the Fender Original 62 pickups. I have them installed in all my basses. I love them and they are cheap ($62 on Amazon).

You'll find love for the vintagey Fenders (I don't remember if its the Original or Custom Shops, though, sorry), the Fralin 5% overwounds, EMG GZRs, Duncan Steve Harris, and the DiMarzio Model P.

Personally, I went for the Model P to replace the MIM standards.

You may be able to find the tone you're looking for without routing for a P-shaped pickup. I've never used one, but I understand the DiMarzio Model J was designed to give a more P-like tone to a J bass. These days there is a huge array of aftermarket J pickups, some of which will probably hit your tonal goals. But if you're set on carving away wood for a P, I won't try to talk you out of it.

That tone is the result of all of the factors that make up your "buddys" [sic] bass - the woods, the pickup, the wiring, the strings, the setup. Not solely due to the pickup.

Well the SPB-1 is a great vintage pickup, although if I was doing doom stuff, I'd opt for something hotter.

in a doom band the nuances between different versions of a pickup will not be noticeable. having said that i just installed an avedissian P and so far i like it. i got it it underwound by 10% to be more of a classic P instead of his standard overwound pickup. overwound pickups in loud bands end up being too muddy for me. that's what amps are for.

The last parts bass I did, (P/J config) I used Seymour Duncan Antiquity ll. 60's vibe with a little something extra. Great sounding pickups.

We use the mij jag in active and it's just as awesome as the American pj jag with our distortion and heavy od setups. I'd focus more on your head than the bass, because you've got a sweet one.
