P-Bass Pickups in a J-Bass?

:help: Hi,

I currently own a Squier Affinity Jazz Bass, as seen here: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

And i wish to install a pair of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder P-Bass Pickups as seen here: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

My question is that would a pair of Precision pickups fit and work with a Jazz bass? Specifically with the ones in the links?

You will need to re-route, and get a new pickguard.

I've put SD QPs in A MIM Fender 5 jazz Bass and I replaced the pups on a squier vintage reissue jag bass which has the combo jazz/precision with SD QPs. Both basses sound great. Unless there's a tonal variance so significant that you want the QP p bass pups on the jazz bass, I would suggest just putting the QP jazz pups on. They're really dynamic with lots of power and allow you to dial in across the tonal spectrum for the jazz bass. Otherwise, the modification isn't impossible but may be costly.

It is possible, my SX Jazz has that config.

reminders:

-you need a custom cut Jazz bass pickguard and the routing should be enlarged.

-the SPB3's are pretty HOT. you might need a matching HOT bridge pickup.

-when both pickups are used together, the 60-cycle hum is still there unless you use a humbucking J bridge pickup (ex. SD STK-J2 Hot Stack)

-it sounds awesome.

I'm primarily a P-bass guy.
Before you go through the trouble of routing for a P pickup though, I'd 1st just try giving your self the option of the 2 J PUs in series. Might be close enough to a P sound to satisfy the craving & still give you the classic J tones. (I almost always use both PUs on equal volume on my J basses)
But hey, route away if you really want a P PU in there. It will sound great.

Ive converted my fender jazz bass to have a precision pickup so its definitely do-able. I had a custom pickguard cut for me but you can order a pre-cut pickguard from warmoth.com

What you'd have to do next is have the pickup cavity routed so that it fits the new pickup. Personally, i love the set up. However if the modification is out of your reach, then i'd suggest getting some quarter pounder jazz pickups and a series/parallel switch. I have the quarterpounder p pickup in my jazz at the moment and i had the quarterpounder j pickups before that with a parallel/series switch. I think that option will get you fairly close.
