P bass..professional instrument?

Don't get yer P panties in a wad. The OP is just wondering why he's seeing more boutique basses, and yet doesn't qualify the statement with where, what type of music, venue, gender of the player, age of the player, whether said player has other basses... until later in the thread.
Good grief. The P bass has boatloads of history. Don't be offended. Besides, it doesn't matter what bass you play - the bass doesn't make you a pro. You do.

Sure a musician can get the job done with a P4 and sure it's been proven hundreds of times... But times changed and there are lots of "professionals" that take advantage of newer technology.
Sure a writer can write a great novel on a typewriter... And sure a lot of classics have been done on a typewriter.. But if you can use a laptop and have the money.. Why not

The OP states the context and the genres of the music in the first post, it just seems that the people who posted after the OP didn't notice so they restated it.
As far as theater goes (I toured for 10 years) you need a 5er on most modern shows. Composers and arrangers love the low notes. Even older shows benefit from adding in lower register work. RENT is a perfect example. It's written for a 4 string, but that's only because that is what the original player played. There's plenty of room to stretch and get low (tastefully). That being said, I played a 6 on that show for 2 years, but ended up playing a 4 string jazz later on the original cast tour. I would have been happy to play a P though. However, having 2 pups is pretty handy for style changes, but most of the time sound changes are done using technique. It's too bothersome to turn knobs all the time, but it's better to have a flexible bass in a show.
I think the question we should ask is that whether the player is professional and not their gears.

Now, I happen to know a bunch of construction workers, and they would not attack somebody for asking about 2x4's... rather, they would just explain it to him... I guess construction workers don't get their self identities defined by the boards the job calls for...
Maybe because construction and art are two different things.
Also, someone used writters and painters as an example as to how they dont compare brushes and pens. As a proffesional artist, I have to say that we do compare brushes, quills, even brands of colour.
The P bass is must I say the most common bass I see on TV, and if it is not a P then it is a Jazz.

OK. But this isn't really about comparisons, is it? Would artistes attack somebody as a troll if he asked if a certain kind of brush that he hasn't seen used much lately has been left behind by newer kinds of brushes?
