P basses without pickguards

Saw this on here previously....love it so I saved it as inspiration for the possible refin on my black/maple Fender CS P above.

(Would you call this shape a single cut P?) ;-)))

IMO this is what it should be. I see the whole pickguard thing as a consequence of Leo F's cheapskate way of building basses. His designs may be monumental in many other respects, but this kind of design choices could (should) have been abandoned many years ago.
Cheapskate or cost effective? He was just following in the footsteps of Henry Ford. That he included a pickguard in the Tele and Tele-derived ‘51 P when it served no ‘cover up’ function tells me that one of the players he would consult with from time to time suggested it. The customer is always right. I’m not partial to the naked look, too boring.

This is my Fender Custom Shop P bass, it came stock with dual Seymour Duncan '51 stack pickups. I liked it better without the guard so I bought this chrome control plate. Although I love black/maple basses, I've thought about sending it off to be refinished in something like a dark cherry burst.

I'm a big fan of dark cherry burst, especially with a maple fretboard. Plus I could see the wood grain being very nice on a CS instrument. At least either way you've got a beautiful bass so you can't go wrong.
