P lover going J

These two are killing me.

Lately I have noticed the best sounding basses at church are single coil Js and the players run both pickups.

Had Js and always liked the neck PU soloed. Also likes the bridge PU soloed but never liked the scooped mid sound of both pickups together.

never say never I guess.

You should pick up a used or new Classic Vibe Jazz. A lot of bang for your buck and they double as an endless modding platform lol. I’ve spent so much money decking mine out but it sounds and looks awesome IMO

Hi darwin-bass :)

I am planning to convert one of my P basses to a J.

I am a Jazz Bass player (when I don't play another bass :D) and like the idea to use something you have

to create something new.

Lately I have noticed the best sounding basses at church are single coil Js and the players run both pickups.

Have you seen the light, or was it more of a evolutionary thing? :D

So I will very likely be disassembling my fav P bass, routing J pickup cavities and making a new pickguard. If it doesn’t work out, I can change it to PJ.

As long as your favorite P bass is a cheap instrument that can easily be replaced... No problem!

But I wouldn't mod my best to find out if it works.

I would get a used Squier Jazz, put one of the p necks on it, play it with both pups full in church

and when the angels start to sing...

No need to turn your fav P into a swiss cheese for nothing!

IMHO of course!

i voted "all steam ahead!

Didn't see that poll!

It needs a "invisible carrot" option! :D

I've historically been rather P-inclined myself, but there is no doubt in my mind that in some situations a J can be better and it really can be just "the room", "the rig", or a combination of the two. Options are good, and going with the flow is fun. I wouldn't think in terms of "a forever shift" in your approach to how you'll gear-up.

Ashley, you should do this. Leave the P. pick up where it is, install the J. pickups on a different circuit. I saw Larry fulcher play a base like this and when he wanted to be a jazz bass it was a jazz and when you wanted to be a pee it was a pee. Make a lot of sense actually.

AFAIK correctly positioned P and J pickups would overlap.

None of that OP makes a lick of sense.

At all.

Please just read it all out loud a few times.
I concur completely here.

The only logical course of action here is to keep the P bass intact and find a Jazz bass. They are available in all forms and for very reasonable prices.

There’s no way to justify the efforts and costs of initiating your plans against (yes, against) your perfectly good P bass vs the cost of buying a jazz bass.
