thanks for your thoughts. Maybe it's irrelevant but i dislike the headstock and bridge on the Sire, design wise.

If I were on a budget and it had to be a Fender-branded P-bass, then I would buy a 10- to 15-year old MIM P-bass locally (so I could play it first) and slap a '63 PV pickup in it. It would likely have a total cost of under $400.

Is it possible to test one of each at a local music shop? Ultimately, you would be the best judge on the bass that would be right for you.

Look for an American Standard after 2009 in the classifieds.

Just played a bunch of Fender Ps at the local store. I loved the Fender American Elite PJ. It was on sale too. There are also a few in the classifieds here on TB.
