P-pickup in a Jaguar bass

Just completed modding my Jaguar by adding a P bass pickup (SD SPB-3) & a Badass II bridge...

Been wanting to do this to a Jag for awhile now... Very pleased with the results. Also did some shielding. It's a lot quieter now.

The two pickups balance very nicely I would say that the SPB-3 has slightly more output than the stock bridge pickup, but that was the sound I was going for. The bridge pickup sounds good by itself, but overall the bass sounds a lot like my other P basses (most of them have the SPB-3 in them). The two pickups together sound great; P-bass growl with a little more highs... Great pick tone.

Also I was impressed with how good the pre-amp sounds now. Before, it was extremely noisy & overpowering. I didn't shield it completely, but surprisingly, it is super-quiet now. It is still has lots of output, but it seems to work better with the SPB-3 (I still have to keep both the treble & bass boost turned down quite a bit).

I made the pickguard. I usually make a template & cut them out with my pin router, but since this was a one-off, I cut it out by hand.

My tuners are the vintage reverse style... If Hipshot makes a D-tuner for that style, I want one.

I have been essentially gassing for a bass just like this but with the P-pup in a reverse position. It is gonna have to be a custom job though because I don't think anyone makes one stock. Very nice bass BTW!

Pretty simple to do like mine; just reverse the p/u.

I replace my stock Jag pickups like a year ago with a Stock set of MIA 2002 J-bass, now is more balanced, more output, more punch etc etc, , , I also noticed an improvement as well when using the preamp, but I use it passive like 95% of the time. Anyway, Im looking forward to change the pickguard, so I was considering to do the same mod with a P-pickup (I got a dimarzio DP that I don’t use) ,,, still thinking about it

Question – What about the bridge? , do you noticed a big difference?

I put the BAII on before I swapped pickups & though I feel it does have a little more clarity & sustain, The difference wasn't huge. I just like Leo Quann's bridges & have used them for years.

I'm more of a passive guy myself, but now the active portion seems more usable (before it was too noisy).
